Default Tripod - Checkin or hand carry on flight

    Hi,

Just like to know how to bring a tripod for overseas photography trip? Do I need to check it in or can hand carry up to the plane. It's a Mamiya fibrecarbon 3 section tripod.

    Thanks in advance.

Thought it's better to hand carry cos I know that one of our fellow CSer has lost her tripod when she had hers checked in?

Syc77 - by your statement, was tripod in the list of your cam equipments then?

Can I say that tripod is not considered as "possible weapon" and is allowed to be hand carried on to the plane.

    Thanks again.

It's ok to hand carry.. i did that just a month ago when i went overseas.. even on United Airlines

If you're carrying a backpack, just strap the tripod at the side.

    Hand carry.

If one puts it in the luggage, it will undergo X-ray scanning, and it may be seen as some weapon-like bazooka, and your luggage may be forced opened for inspection.

I've asked an Australian immigration officer before and that's what he told me.

    a what? a bazooka?

That customs official operating the x-ray machine needs to be sent back for re-training then.

The closest-weapon like thing I can think of is a multi-barrel minigun. heh

i have hand carried my tripod on different airlines all over asia and europe - domestic, international, budget carriers etc. - no problems at all.
the only exception was when i flew back from brisbane on emirates, earlier this year. i was asked to checkin the tripod.

if you are planning to checkin your tripod, you can take a few precautions.
    1. remove the ballhead and handcarry it in your cabin baggage.
    2. wrap your tripod in double layers of bubble-wrap or thin foam or rubber mat (you can get those sleeping mats in the backpacking shops at golden mile food court, for 3-5 bucks) and put into your check-in luggage.

    hope this helps.

I have checked in the tripod 3 times without problem with Silkair/SIA/Budget before .... the only time I had problem was with the Johor airport's custom.

Once again thanks to one and all for your imputs.

I will keep the ball head in my luggage and tie the tripod to my camera backpack and hand carry it up the plane.
Have to be at the airport by 7.15am. Going to taste 40 degree C
I shall post my encounters at both airports on my return.

    Good health and Happy photographing.

when i asked the check in counter if I could hand carry my CF tripod. She said "no" got to check it in. However, when on the plane, I saw at least 1 other passenger who hand carried on his tripod approx the same length.
