Assuming picture quality is the priority concern followed by price and size, which lens would you go for if you were to choose 1 under each of the category listed for your Nikon DSLR? Any other good alternatives that falls under either categories? Primes are welcomed. Please advise.
20-80mm Category 1) Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG MACRO 2) Nikkor AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8D IF-ED 3) Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) 70-200mm Category 1) Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG MACRO HSM 2) Nikkor AF-S VR 70-200mm f/2.8G IF ED |

Are the quality differences seriously noticable when compared? Haven't owned any of the F/2.8 lenses yet, don't really have a feel on what its really like when shooting with one.

If by picture quality, I guess most would reccomend the Nikkors. But if you're going by the price, I find the Tamron 28-75 pretty decent for a $600 piece.

I have issues with the Tamron 28-75mm wide open at f/2.8. It's just not sharp enough when used on a D200. The Nikon 70-200/2.8VR on the other hand is tack sharp wide open.
(2) for the second part of course. I wouldn't suggest any in the 24-70mm range as they don't have VR and VR is important. I'm using the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 VR to cover that range at the moment until Nikon releases an f/2.8 for that range with VR. |

20-80mm Category
2) Nikkor AF-S 28-70mm f/2.8D IF-ED 70-200mm Category 1) Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX DG Actually i have the above already. I dont see a need for original tele nikon, as performance to me is not fantastic over the sigma and does not justify the higher price. But for wide angle, nikon is good, thus i keep the 28-70, along with the 17-35 |

Tamron 28-75mm F2.8
Nikkor 70-200mm F2.8 VR Currently using the Tamron lens and very satisfied with it. Most of my portrait and street shots are taken with it. For the tele, VR would be a big plus if handheld. SWM is a bonus. If always to be used in tripod, the Sigma would do just fine I think. I don't think we can tell which lens took which picture, do we? .

sounds a little like a lemon copy or your standard for sharpness is very high. ![]() mine works great, tho 2.8 is noticeable softer than f4, but still sharp enough for most use on my d50. ![]() |
