A P&S also picks up the nearest object. The reason many of the points light up after AF is mainly due to the large DOF on P&S.

more cross sensors and less linear sensors would be very good for the dslr.. =)

I think the dirt-cheap PENTAX K100D has 9 cross sensors and two linear ones. But... that's on the paper. In practice it doesn't pick the nearest object and prefers to stay at the center 90% of the time.

And of course there's 1D Mark 3 with a total of 45 points, out of which 19 are crosses.

According to my experience the AF on 400D is better than that on Pentax K100D. The latter is pretty useless in auto-select mode. Can't speak for K10D though.

Maybe this is Canon's strong point?

i would prefer 400D has more cross sensors to compose shots with subject at different corners.. sharp photos.. my personal feel..

Except if you're really close to the subject, even an angular shift (the direction the camera is pointing at) results in distance change between the first lens element and the surface you're focusing on..

auto AF point for movement is better than single AF point for movement?

Me 2. I dont believe in so much focus point. Just turn all off n stay centre. Use the centre to focus and recompose your image. I believe this is a easy and fast method.
