Does anyone have experience of overseas loss/damage and claimed insurance?

So far we have heard of many. insurance for photographic equipments seem to cost you a big bomb, give really limited cover and does not ensure success of claims by laying barriers through procedures....

so does anyone have a positive experience to share? or simply that buying insurance for overseas trip for equipments is just not viable and more expensive than the lost.

i.e. if i project the risk of losing $2k equipment once over 15 trips over 5 years, how much would i need to pay for the insurance of that and would it pay off?
