Default Anyone know what this is......




Saw this in Manado recently, about 10M of water.... It doesn't look like a slugs or a sort of 'animal'. Not even sure if its a coral or sponge..... anyone knows ??

If I am not wrong. This is a Basket Star, sleeping during the day.

i thought basket stars are typically found in deeper water and where the temperature is cooler?

For every generalisation we make about nature and its creatures, there are always exceptions .... "tropical" basketstars can commonly be found in shallow waters, especially at night. Not sure if they migrate up from the depths, but that is a possibility.

Recently saw a (juvenile) basketstar in Bali and took a photo similar to the one shown here .. will share when photos have been uploaded to flickr.
