Hello,i'm going to purchase a flash gun soon and i am not so sure which one to get.I simply need one for bounce flash.Events covered will simply be family gatherings, engagements, weddings and small scale events like that.Any recommendations? Cheers!

you got only 2 choices from canon camp at least (assuming you dont want to consider Metz/Sigma/etc)

thats
1. 580EX Speedlite
2. 430EX Speedlite

given the description you gave, i think the 430ex should be more than sufficient for your usage..

Since you mentioned small scale, I'd say 430EX.
Otherwise 580EX for more power power power! Especially since you will be bouncing, power incase you need it - but may be redundant power if you don't.

I recently bought a Metz 58 flash instead of a 580 Ex II for only $600 brand new. It was a revelation using it - its much more powerful than my present 580 Ex and the colours are more accurate. I highly recommend it over the Canon flash. It has all the features that the 580 has (and more!).

IIRC, the guide number for the Metz 58 AF is the same as the 580EX.
