eye level minus camera height minus tripod head height will approx to ideal tripod height.
you want speed, get a ball head. you want to accuracy, get a 2 way head. |

The major criteria for me for a tripod is to get one that you will be willing to bring along - therefore it has to be light enough, and handy enough to carry when it is fully closed so it can fit in a bagpack etc. I would suggest something 3lbs or less and around 17inches closed. The 2 major types of locks are the latch style and the twist style, either is ok but I prefer the latch style as I find it slightly faster to deploy and close.
As for height, I guess choosing a tripod that extends to you height minus 12inches would be safe, without the center extension. Best to try it out in the shop with your equip. I suggest a getting a ball head. There are many ball heads - most pp use Manfrotto e.g 486RC2 or a higher end brand like Arcatech, Markins, RRS, Kirk etc and they will attach onto the tripod legs. The standard screw thread size is 1/4inch. I think some manufacturers - Slik? use a different screw thread size so you might have to check. Most tripod head manufacturers use a quick release of some sort so you will have to get the corresponding plates as well to attach to your camera. I suggest getting something with the Arca Swiss style mount and Wimberley plates. |

I'd find a tripod which is about my height fully extended, without using the centre column, will be just right. Do check on the maximum load too.
A ball head is fast and easy to use. But a pan head will give more precision. Either way, get one with a spirit lever, so that you know if you are aligned with the horizon. |
