    Doesn't those cameras in combination with the 580EX flash has something similar to Olymplus Super FP mode which allows sync at up to 1/4000s? I remember having heard something similar for Canon also.

    ok, understand, the ambient is too bright, and the distant to subject is too far, and you should shoot with direct flash. there is no other more powerful canon flash than 580.

    There is a function in 580EX which allows for high speed sync. It is available for 550EX as well. Read the manual, I'm sure there is some explaination of the function inside.
