Archive in Motion: 50 Jahre/Years documenta, 1955 - 2005 Exhibition
Co-presented by the National Museum of Singapore and Goethe-Institut Singapore, Archive in Motion spotlights the complex and often controversial history, of one of the world's most important contemporary art events. Occurring every 5 years in Kassel, Germany, the documenta has been reflecting not only changing artistic and curatorial passions but also the political and social movements of the times. 50 years of documenta are also 50 years of the history of art and contemporary history. This exhibition about an exhibition draws upon the rich documenta archives to reconstruct its historical presentation. Beyond the art itself, Archive in Motion demonstrates the value of art archives in facilitating the understanding of art and history.
A parallel exhibition, Picturing Singapore 1955-2005: An Archival Perspective, will also be showcased. This exhibition turns to the archives to form a visual account of Singapore from the turbulent post-World War II decades to the early years of the 21st century. A selection of archival materials, such as posters and publications are reproduced in a timeline format. The work shows the relevance and currency of art in this period which saw transformations in the political and socio-economic landscape of Singapore.
