I have been comtemplating to get the 50mm sigma macro... but come thinking of it, maybe I should just get a longer range one.
So yesterday, I went to CP and wanted to try btw tamron 90mm and tokina 100mm but CP only has the Tokina one. :/ Was wondering... which one is a seriously better lens? In terms of sharpness? |

I've heard great things about the Tamron, not so much the Tokina. The Tokina should have better build quality though.

If you often read photography magazines that do reviews of macro lenses, the Tamron is always on par with the Canon 100mm F2.8 macro. Optically it is a sharp as the Canon but loses points on build quality but then you are paying about half the price of the Canon.
Mechanically the Tamron's barrel will extend when you focus onto small objects. The Canon has internal focusing so maintains its length. Also the Canon's body is made with more metal and so weigh heavier and is built for the professional. I have the Tamron and I think it is the best value-for-money third part lens for macro and portraiture. It is probably the sharpest lens in my camera bag. Not surprising CP is pushing the Tokina because they are the agents for Tokina! |

there's alot of good review on Sigma 150mm Macro. Go google it.......I'm getting it this weekend. Was cosidering Nikon 200mm macro vs Sigma 150 Macro. Seems Sigma 150 macro is valued for money base on price vs performance. Sigma 150mm macro not far off the acclaimed Nikon 200mm macro! Personally I'm using 60mm and 105mm but sometimes it will not give me that reach. That's why I'm going for longer macro lens. hope this helps....

Just wana ask. Do you all use the flash for macro shots, even in broad day light?
I've just "experimented" using flash, the pic turn out really sharp! Yup, very happy with the results using flash. ![]()

1) Stop the motion. 2) Make background darker and separate from object. 3) Can use smaller aperture. Regards, Arto. |

I have to use flash cos I'm usually using 1/250s (on a monopod), F14+. Even at ISO400 on a bright day if there's no flash the frame basically comes out almost completely black. My flash provides ALL the light in my macro shots.

If we want more than 1:1 when using our macro lens, we need extension tubes right?
I can only find the prices for TC in the price thread, it is not the same as extension tubes right? For extension tubes, what brand and roughly how much for use with D80 and Tokina 100mm? TIA

U can use extension tube or close up lens attachment such as the raynox250.
Tube costs under 200, uniplus, kenko etc with meter coupled. |
