Default Rising drinks prices in Coffee Shops

Hmm..I dont think i have started a thread in Kopitiam before..but just voice it out here anyway to see whats the situation in other parts of Singapore..
But recently I have been quite sickened that one of the coffee shop in Toa Payoh (near Cash Converters) has raised drinks prices dramatically...a can of HSC oolong tea..from what I believe was $1.20 to $1.40! Talk about exploiting the impending GST increase for increasing profits..I have decided to boycott buying drinks from this coffeeshop even though I love eating the chicken rice there..
From now on plain water..or even just buy from Cheers and 7-11 which ironically has now become cheaper than coffee shops..
Whats the situation in other coffee shops? Share and "warn" fellow CSers..

another simple example, kopi up to $1 from $0.90. Ya $0.10 may not seem much on the surface, but wat the heck, its more than 10% increase in price !!!! and those kopi shops are not going to increase the price to $0.93 or $0.94 or $0.95, they will just up it to $1.

ask gah men to catch these kopi shops are watever crap shops is no use one. They will just use excuse such as rental increase la and watever bull crap and they can get away with it already. and those management that raise the rental fees will push the blame to the land owner. and u know which are the major land owners...

wan an exact 2% increase in everything is totally impossible. the opportunity to increase price will be exploited everywhere.

btw take a good look at the drinks prices in cheers now. do u still remember wat are prices they were selling at 2-3months back?

I usually just carry a water bottle with me for most outings.
Maybe it's uncool but it sure saves a bomb from having to pay for those high-profit-margin drinks.

The increase mirrors the time when GST was first introduced. deja vu?
Anyway that 2% increase in GST has a cumulative knock-on effect on prices all round, so there will definitely be an increase in prices that exceeds 2%. Is it any wonder that when GST was first introduced, IRAS collected much, much more that was originally estimated. At this rate of price increase I dare not imagine what prices will be like when GST reaches 10%.

(Needs to remember to put water bottle in camera bag)

    U guys know what?

I'd rather have my makan first, and den seek out 7-11, any supermarket or NTUC, selling bottled drinks individually for cheap to quench my desire for sugared water.

Yes, 0.90c for a whole bottle of iced tea (not thoroughly chilled, but cold or not, its still sugared water) compared to $1 a small miserable can at kopitiams. I dun get any better deals for that. Plus with that PET Bottle, I can drink a little, close the cap and when the desire arises again, unscrew the cap and drink again without carrying an open cup drinking from it with all the dust floating in the air.

Dats what I normally do though.

I think there's a Lowepro holder or something like that that's the perfect size for a water bottle right?

BTW, for those who own the Lowepro Photo Runner and still have their SBO in good condition, time to do some modification.... Esp with that water bottle pouch...

Like some of you have mentioned, my way of dealing with this is to buy food only. I don't order drinks from kopitiam.
I get some nasty looks sometimes from certain kopi-kia (or aunty) but I can live with that

Complaining about price hike? You can choose to boycott this shop, that shop. But that doesn't make any difference to them. Simply because they don't just depend on you for survival. Many uncles / aunties, etc are still patronising because they don't really care.

Look at the Singapore Economy, isn't it doing fantastic well?

    1) Stock Market rallies. STI is at historical high. Some predicted that STI will cross over 4,000 points by end of this year.

    2) Property prices (private + HDB) shoot up, series of En Block sales, demand up, etc

    3) Min. 3 months bonuses on average, etc as the whole economy is doing well.

This trend will continue as more good news are in the pipeline such as IR and F1.

What is 2% increase in GST or more. Nobody will complain or care after a while once they discovered that their pockets are full of notes.

Look around Orchard Road now, packed like sardines due to the Singapore Great Sale. How many people really care about the 10 cent or 50 cents hike?

Sad to say that Singapore has come to a stage that nobody dare to defy. You can only use the Internet space to voice out your grievances, etc. What else can you do?

Why no one complain about prices of drinks in restaurants and fast food outlets?? their prices obviously are a lot more than coffee shop though the products are the same...

I think maybe it's because we don't really eat that often in restaurants and fast food outlets as compared to at coffee shops? Coffee shops represent the lowest affordable limit of outside dining and when that limit gets pushed up we see it as a 'basic necessity' being more costly and that the foods will follow suit soon. Of course, probably doesn't apply to someone that carries a tiffin pack of lunch prepared at home before work, and/or cooks at home after work... but how many people actually does that nowadays?

Well, its your choice. Either 1) bring your own bottle of water or even better still, dont go to that coffee shop. 2) if you die die want to go there for chicken rice - go ahead and complain to CASE. have hope that garment will do something about it.
