Default Hello...

Hi people here, i am totally new at photography and i am astonished by the pictures taken by my teacher. He said its alternative photography and is taken using a lomo camera and sampler.

I read the forums and got a little knowledge on them and i have decided to buy cameras which can take alternative photographs.

I need some help, what are the different types of cameras for these type of pictures?

What are the differences between those cameras?

Where can i buy them?

Thanks alot alot alot.. I hope i can get help.

i am thinking, if i pick up photography, i cna add photos to my portfolio in the future!

welcome to our little corner!

first off, u can read our little FAQ.

technically, lomo is a brand, not a camera. i think ur teacher got the definitions a little skewed when trying to describe alternative photography. come to think of it, wat is his definition of 'alternative' photography?

here, we like to call anything off-the-wall photography as alternative - regardless u do it on film or digital. we use all sorts of cameras... and none - especially for some of us who make our own cameras.

however, if u wanna start off on alternative photography (whichever way ur teacher defines it), u can start by just going to the nearest salvation army 2nd-hand store or cash converter to pick up one of those el-cheapo 35mm film PnS cameras. load it with some film (preferably expired... heehee) and shoot. u dun need to invest in those relatively expensive lomo-brand cameras (like LC-A/+) yet. another camera is to pick up a holga from perly or jcryan55 (see our FAQ for contact). set u back ard $80. but, mind u - the holga used 120 format (aka Medium Format) film. so, it will costs a bit more than ur regular 35mm film.

end of the day - have fun.

Thanks for the info..i saw searched the net and i saw pictures by the action sampler and holga. I love the effects the pictures turn out. Do most shops sell them?

I have only used digital before, so, which films are the ones which more places sell? Most threads i read speaks of 35mm.. They are the common ones?

Are those cameras only made of plastic?

a bit of both - the 'nice' effects are partly due to camera itself, partly due to the photographer and how he/she chooses to process the pics - whether the pics are from film or otherwise. so, dun be too caught up by the brand of camera used.

eg. the action sampler takes a series of pics on a single negative. u can easily (more or less) replicate it on photoshop.

all those fuzzy holga pics u see on the web? heck - there are even photoshop actions which automatically convert every pic u have to holga-ish.

35mm refers to the format. ur DSLR is a 35mm camera (for those who wanna quibble abt crop factor and such... we can do so in general tech sub-forum). 35mm film is the most commonly available film ard. u can even pick them up in ur neighbourhood shops.

120 format is medium format. u can read up more at the respective sub-forum.

35mm is the best to start off with becos u can get them easily and process them easily. most shops ard ur neighbourhood still sell and process 35mm film.

ah... no. not exactly. ask max2.8 to show u his horizont pano cam. made of metal.

Its the way the films are treated. Xpro or expired, both give special effect. camera not so much lah. Dun believe, just buy a cheap cheap auto film camera, load with slide or expired film, shot and process/xpro. You'll see surprising results. Of course the way of shooting also important. You must "anyhow" shoot, bo chup like dat. Shoot signboard, shoot feet, shoot friend digging nose.

see the FAQ... or else, it's ebay.

depending on wat camera u want to buy. take max's advice - get a cheap PnS from cash converters and try. lomo-brand cameras are not dat cheap, even from ebay. or else, just post a WTB on Buy/Sell, and see wat is being offered.

yahoo singapore auctions also have occasional lomo-brand cameras for sale.

I know the owner of the website, Nadia, met her once. I think she's still selling those cameras in Far East Plaza, somewhere on the 4th level. Get splitcam! My all time favourite camera but spoil very easily
