U have to calibrate your monitor which I did. Even with that, the colours will be somewhat different. The reason is because your monitor produces light while paper reflects light. So you will never get the kind of pop that your pictures have on screen. But it will be close.

As for printer profiling, unless u are a pro, there really isn't a need for it... after u print, if the print is acceptable in terms of colour, brightness and "pop", then it really does not matter how it differs from the original file. Very often, the differences are subtle hues and saturation issues which will vary from shot to shot since your shooting conditions are different... but if u are shooting studio under controlled lighting all the time, then it would be easier to reproduce the same set of colours every time... in printing, u also need to experiment. Even the pros print a few copies to decide which setting is the best or looks the best on paper... don't sweat it if printing photos is only a hobby...

Hi TME,

Does that mean there is no benefit in calibrating the monitor? Because I am also facing the problem that the print looks different from the screen display. I always have to increase the brightness on the image to get a more desirable output. Otherwise, it's a dark print-out. Quite disappointing.

There is benefit from calibrating the monitor. The colours of your printouts now match the screen right? The only problem is the brightness issue. This has to do with the difference in the way colour is produced for screen and paper. The screen transmits light (i.e. there is a light source behind the glass, so the colour is much brighter, greater pop). Paper reflects light and so the image tends to look darker. So u usually have to boost the curves of brightness of the image to match the screen. After a while u will get a range of values to boost that will work.

Even with 100% calibration like the pros do, u dun get 100% match - there is still some difference - the dynamic range of the monitor far exceeds the paper and ink... so don't compare so closely lor...
