Default S5Pro & SB800

Do you guys experiencing S5Pro giving you around -2/3 to -1 stop underexposure when shooting bounce flash off the ceiling using TTLi with SB800?

I find that I need to set the camera to +2/3 to + 1 stop to get an acceptable exposure for bounce flash. However, the exposure is spot on if I fire the flash directly at the object using iTTL. If I use iTTL BL, I will also get underexposure of around -1/3 to -2/3 stop.

I am using Nikkor lens by the way.

dont need to be s5 to have under exposed. i think uare shooting at TTl right? whenever that, when shooting bounced too, remember to increase output from 2/3 to 1 and 1/3 to get a just right exposure.

Thanks for replying.

So it looks like the camera or flash TTL is not "intelligent" enough to produce a correct exposure when using bounce flash. I had been compensating my camera with +2/3 to +1 stop whenever using bounce flash but it's kind of frustrating when my direct flash shot come out over exposed when I forgot to re-set the compensation to zero.

Dun remember I had this problem many years back when I was using F4s with SB24. Anyway will bring the SB-800 to NSC for a checkup just in case.

No such problems with my SB800s and my S5. I use TTL and SU4.

A friend of mine had an identical problem on his D80. He sent in the SB to Nikon and found it to be the cause of the problems. So you may want to bring it in to NSC to check.

Thanks for your feedback Azure.

Yeah, I will send my SB-800 for a check .... just hope that NSC will not point finger to Fujifilm body .... otherwise it will be no end if the 2 companies start pointing finger at each other.

The S5 Pro is a D200 body, a Nikon body. But you do have a valid reason to worry. Hard to find decent tech staff these days.

yeh ok.

u need to increase and decrease output depending on situation, experiences, distance from lens to subject and lighting enviroment. haha.

it wont know if u bounced it off so thats why u must increase the value.

i think you should be reading more on iTTL instead... modern flash do know where you are pointing the flash at...

Under extreme lighting or high contrast situation, I do agree you have to manually compensate the exposure/flash output, but I expect current TTL technology should be able to take 80% of the normal shooting. No?

Be it bounce flash or not, for TTL, technically the sensor in the camera dun see any differences except to cut off the light output once it reach the desire brightness at the selected aperture.

As I've said, if using TTL, the camera or flash generally no need to know if you are shooting direct or bounce flash. The sensor in the camera measure the "brightness" of the subject thru the lens (hence TTL) and once it determined the correct exposure it will just cut off the flash. Of course all this happened in split second. So long as your subject to camera distant is within the Flash/TTL range, the TTL will take care of the exposure automatically (at least for most of the time).

I hope too. Yesterday already sent it to NSC and will be expecting their call within these few days.
