Here's one lightning shot taken just now at 8:50pm. The thunderstorm is located somewhere at Sungei buloh, if I'm not wrong, wherelse I'm at the eastern side. Won't be surprised if someone captures the exact image as mine as the thunderstorm is quite active for 20 mins or so.

Thks for taking a look, Juli
There should be some thunderstorm activity going on at the south-eastern direction now, about 40km away. You might wanna train ur eyes on it and see if it can taken. |

Thanks guys~! Just wish to share that lightning photography can be quite easy and fun if one has the oppurtunity.
The 1st pic was taken intently by going to a high floor in a neighbouring block with an unobstructed view. Camera is set on manual mode, ISO 400, f7.1, 30 secs exposure. Lens used is 18-55 mm lens set at ard 30mm, focussed to infinity by aiming at distant light source, and thereafter set back to manual focus and keep shooting all the way. A black card (got this idea recently from a CS discussion ) is used to cover excessive exposure, once a bright lightning is captured within the 1st 10 secs. The last 2 pix, isn't very well taken, as I simply just aim my 70-300mm, set at 70mm , and fire away from my room after returning home from the 1st session. Even though the storm activity is far, ie somewhere between Bintan and Batam, it was intense enough to be photographed. So guys, not that difficult, but please do not do it in the open and when the storm is near. |

These lightning shots are from distant thunderstorm, meaning they are at least 20-30 km away. Therefore, it will stay around the same location. If the storm is nearby or just overhead, I won't know how to estimate either

Like to share one of my fav lightning shots, this was taken with a 50mm F1.8 set at F/10, ISO 100, on bulb mode for >1024 secs. The good thing about this lens is that I can visually see the outline of the storm cloud in the dark and compose it nicely.

v nice indeeed... i saw the thunderstorm. To me..thunderstorms are sort of fireworks...as difficult ot capture..and even more rare and untimely. was rushing home for dinner and rushing out again..and the frequency of the storm wasn't high enough to set up a tripod in the meanwhile etc...
well, i'm a fireworks fan anyways. www.perqjon.com/fireinthesky,. : ) |
