Default 湖南凤凰 Fenghuang Old Town

Fenghuang literally means "Phoenix" in Chinese, a small and old town situated on the western boundary of Hunan Province.

Hi Astin,
Just to share with you how we visited Fenghuang :
1) Take Tiger Airways to Macau
2) At Macau Airport, there's a counter selling bus ticket, take a bus (cost RMB 25, 15-20mins) to GongBei Checkpoint 拱北关口
3) Cross the checkpoints (Macau and China), keep right and walk for 5 mins, there a bus station拱北车站. Take a bus to GuangZhou Airport (cost RMB 80, 2.5 hrs)
4) From GuangZhou Airport, take a domestic flight to Tongren, Guizhou Province (贵州铜仁) cost 600 RMB can be cheaper if u book earlier, one way direct flight, 1.5 hrs
5) Take a cab @ Tongren Airport to Fenghuang. cost RMB 150, 2-3 hrs

We went back thru diff route :
1) From Fenghuang bus station, take a bus to HuaiHua 怀化 (cost RMB 30?, 2.5-3hrs)
2) At HuaiHua bus station, take a bus to ZhiJiang 芷江 (cost RMB 15, 1 hr)
3) Take a cab from ZhiJiang city to ZhiJiang Airport (RMB10, depends on you negotiation skills)
4) Take a domestic flight to GuangZhou (cost RMB 600, transit @ Changsha 长沙, 3hrs)
5) Take a bus to GongBei bus station, last bus is 2130 or 2200 from GZ Airport(cost RMB 80, 2.5hrs)
6) After crossing the China Checkpoint (in between China and Macau Checkpoint), keep LEFT, there's a counter selling bus ticket to Macau Airport (cost RMB 30)
7) Cross the Macau checkpoint and take the bus to Macau Airport

hope it helps

Wow, what a detailed description. You must have enjoyed the trip very much. You did a lot of reading and preparation before you started off this trip? Did anyone (police, locals, gangsters or thives, etc) out there create troubles for you?

Hmm, i would suggest go with a small group of ppl, at least 2, 3-4 is ideal, instead of going alone. Unless you're very familiar with China and doesn't looks like foreigner, hence you can pretend you're come from Guandong or Hokkien. As we're carrying lots of camera equipments, it's not so easy to keep a low profile, so go with group of ppl is a better idea, at least we can cover each other.

Forgot to mention, if u manage to get a direct flight to Guangzhou Airport, then can bypass the border crossing part. Do your homework properly before going is very very essential.

If u only want to cover the Fenghuang old town, 2 days should be more than enough.
If u oso interested in Miao Villages (苗寨) and Southern Great Wall (南方长城) around there, you can consider a 4-5 days stay.

There's lots of hotels along TuoJiang River, just pick a better view one. Room rate is just around RMB 70 per day during off-peak season.

Thanks for the info. I actually want to shoot something around the Fenghuang old town, along the river and Miao villages, I think need to stay a few days to catch the sunrise and sunset mood. If I manage to have time to go, I may take the Singapore - Guangzhou - Guizhou (Tongren or Guiyang) route.
