Lightbulb UNSW in Singapore closes down after three months

    http://www.unswasia.edu.sg/homepage.html

    Dear students,

As you may be aware, UNSW Asia will be closing at the end of session one 2007. Before making this decision, the University has explored an extensive range of options. However the enrolment numbers for 2007 did not meet our expectations, and this has caused us to revise our projections. The decision to close down is a difficult one but it is the prudent course of action to take.

I would like to reassure you that the welfare of our students is a priority. UNSW is committed to enabling all students at UNSW Asia to continue their studies with as little disruption as possible, whether in Sydney or Singapore, and has flown in a team of specialist advisers to work with local experts to help each student. Students will have the opportunity to email, phone and meet with these staff over the coming weeks to discuss the educational options available to them, and the ways in which the University can help students to realise their goals for university study.

Students who are enrolled at UNSW Asia in session one 2007 will be offered a place in an equivalent program at UNSW Sydney from session two 2007, and scholarships to help with travel and accommodation costs. Students who transfer to UNSW Sydney will receive full credit for the studies they have undertaken at UNSW Asia, and will retain credit for any advanced standing already granted. Tuition fees for these students will be set at the publicised UNSW Asia rates.

Those who have received offers to study at UNSW Asia in future sessions will have the offer of a place in their program at UNSW Sydney.

In addition, the University will work with those who are unable to accept a place in Sydney to meet their needs.

Because there's too many foreign students taking up courses here which creates an illusion the education market here is big and a strategic choice for SEA education hub.

But the problem is that a bulk of these students are not real. They just opt for the cheapest and longest course available so that they can work or commit some vice trade or simply just stay in Singapore with their student visas.

When it comes to a time when they earned enough or broke already, or decided to return, they'll just go, leaving a string of unfulfilled instament backlog for course fees behind.

I think the market researcher didn't prowl the dark alleys and talk to folks in the coffee shops to make a well balanced recommendation.

As for the students, foreign talents or foreign trash, you decide.

Too many U in Singapore and not enough of enrolments...

ROI is the key to the survival of the University.

The students here got a scholarship to Sydney to finish their studies. Isn't that great for them? It will cover their airfare plus lodging. If I were a 1st semester student, I will be very happy.

What's there to be happy about?

    It's not a scholarship. It's a subsidy.

I am in no mood to go for the rest of my classes today. This utterly sucks.

    You affected?

What are the T&C for the "scholarships"? If it's I don't see any reason why not take this opportunity to go down under for a study stint. It's an experience.
