Default Possible New DC from Nikon?

Guys, don't get excited yet, Nikon has not actually come out with a new DSLR, but what do u think the chances are they will do so in 6 months time?

I say they may come out with a "entry" level DSLR costing around S$2.2k ++.

My deduction is that they currently have the D100 which cost over S$3K and the 5700 that cost less than S$2K. As a marketing guy, I think it makes sense to have something intermediate.

What do u guys think? Any rumours to share...

Yes it must be true! I read it in the dpreview forums too! They're never wrong.

No need. All they need to do is to reduce the price of the D100. If the current price of the 10D is going at S$2750, all Nikon needs to do is to reduce it to say S$2999 with freebies like 1x 256MB CF and hard case thrown in to make it competitive.

If they were to produce something for S$2.2, it is too close to the 5700.

I suspect though, the next round will be a long-awaited upgrade of the D1X/H. Rumours has it that it will be using a Foveon X3 chip with 7-8M pixels to give an equivalence of 12-14MP Bayer-pattern cam.

Looks like the price of the D100 is already starting to drop in Australia....

I was just looking at www.europeancameras.com and last week their price for the Nikon D100 Body c/w EN-EL3/Charger, NikonVeiw 5.0 and Photostation 4.5 was approx AUD$4,300.

Their price is now $3750

But I hope it drops even more....

A $1k to >$1k drop is all possible. The D100 outsold DSLRs in its class (ie. S2 Pro, D60 and SD9) by a reasonably large ratio/margin worldwide, this is also partly attributed to Canon's inability to produce enough D60s back than.

The usual timeframe needed to recoup R&D spendings is between 6-12 months (sometimes longer for some other products). Hence, judging by the number of cameras they sold since the initial launch, the units they are selling for the last few months are in fact, pure profits.

You will be surprised how little it cost Nikon to produce a D100 and for that matter, how much it will cost Canon to produce the 10D (in China btw, this explains the eclipsing price drop).

As for a SG price drop, I think you will hear the news very soon, trust me, it will happen. Just my 2 dimes worth

If you take the current D100 price of ~$3400, minus off the Lexar card which should be around $300, minus off hard case, that should drop it to on par with a 10D. And going by the fact that Nikon is usually a bit more expensive, that's about right. Maybe prices will drop after 31/3/2003 when the Lexar promo ends.

*Rub hands with glee* I tried the D100 yesterday and it's wonderful! Pretty instinctive to use, even though my though I'm a Minolta user and my most sophisticated camera is the 7Hi. I do find the camera a bit too big though. What I need is something small, cheap and good. Any idea when the Nikon entry level digital slr will come out, or whether it's purely rumour? What about other compact digital SLRs like the Canon D300 and Pentax *istD?

BTW, can you Nikon users tell me why you love your Nikon lenses and cameras do much? I'm a total newbie at Nikon and Canon systems, so I'll appreciate some help on this. Please provide a clear listing, if possible, and DO NOT start a flame war! Keep your hats on! TIA.

It's call equipment loyalty.
Canon users love their Canons
Nikon users love their Nikons
Minolta users love their Minoltas
Leica users love their Leicas

Some are irrational, some are not.

So what is it about the Nikons you've used that makes you hang onto them?

More of started with it, stuck with it. Most importantly, it works for me. Sure, there are quirks here and there, but it gets what I needed done, done.

Oh dear, not quite the hard sell I was expecting! But I do appreciate you're honesty about it. I feel that equipment loyalty doesn't really exist, most people stick to a brand because they've bought into a system, or because of the snob/underdog(!) appeal of their gear.

Well, at the end of the day, all the manufacturer's equivalent models perform roughly the same. E.g. EOS 3 vs F100 is roughly the same. So it all boils down to the user - which one you prefer, which one you feel more comfortable working with, etc.

Of coz, I sometimes love to defend/attack brands for fun, but that's another matter.

i agree with Watcher's deductions. it's only logical cos the D1x/h has been around for a few years already and Nikon needs a 1Ds equivalent more than a 10D rival model. the D100's more or less covered that area.

i'm a bit skeptical about the Foveon chip rumour though. but it'll be great if they really pull that off. i'll be flogging off most of gear to get my hands on something like that.

Well, Nikon Canada has dropped the D100 price to CDN $2749. See here: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/con...id=7-6051-6070
