There is something wrong with the background and the yellow cast was si beh strong as it was shot with a hot tungsten desklamp and daylight slide film. It was the only lamp I had as I remembered every piece of gelatine I put in front of it was half melt.

Hahah! Not every one of my photos can fetch this kind of money. Only once in 7 years which is better than my 4D investments.

This goes on to show a crappy photo gets the chance to be sold with a good price if someone has a use for it. And sometimes you don't need to have good gear to make a good buck.

No I am not getting the full 5,500 USD. The agency pockets 70% of it leaving me only 1,650 USD. Si beh Sian. 7 years ago I was desperate enough to sign a 70% them 30% me contract with them. I've stopped sending photos to them for years. The moral of the story is: you'll get screwed when you start up and you'll also get screwed when you're not starting up".
I saw this pic in the most recent Playboy...........

Congrats Sion! I knew you could do it!

    Sion,

If you've sold the photo does this mean you no longer own it?
If you no longer own it, are you allowed to post it?

Just want to know what kind of rights a photographer has over his photos once it is sold.

I only sell the rights to use the photo. The copyrights belong to me.

However if you sign an exclusive contract with an agency, you're not allowed to use the same photo commercially or give it to another agency.

There is such a thing call exclusive rights to a photo which a buyer can buy. It is normally for a major ad campaign. This will stop the competitors using the same photo. But it is going to cost a lot of money.

These days with so much competition around it is getting more difficult to get consistent good sales through agencies.

The agency is quite good lah... can find buyer for USD5500. I think they deserve the 70%.

That's true. Their marketing reach is incredible.

One of them is doing something like 70 countries through the subagents they appoint.

Normally 50% to photographers and 50% to agencies is a fair split. The percentage could sometimes be negotiable depending how much they need your photos or how desperate you are.
