Its seem that pict is abit OOF maybe you can try manual focus and move in and out to get the clearer shot be shooting.

I use manual focus, D200, manual nikkor 105mm, 25 extension tube

Tried already, think my extension tube is not long enough. Also holding an extra flash diffuser in the left hand doesn't help with stability.

Thanks

Then i think you should use either a tripod or buy or make a flash bracket

i think it is more of lens softness rather than OOF...

I tried to get a flash bracket, but when I screwed it on to the body, the weight of the flash is actually quite heavy, and I am afraid it may damage the screw threads

any suggestions on good quality flash brackets?

Tripod is another option which i have not tried yet.

This critter is also quite small, about 6mm only, so this is close to 100% crop

Thanks

i don't think it is lens softness. i have shot with the 105mm micro, with manual focusing. it can produce extremely sharp results. ts mentioned that he had trouble with stability. as for whether tube long enough or not... may be something subjective. maybe need more practice with manual focusing first, then add tube for additional close-up factor.

me 2 cents.

It seems more to be soft than OOF. Look thru your images afew times, and I can't find a part in the pic where the image is at the sweet spot. So could be the extension lens that cause the softness???? Not too sure.
