Default Nikon D40x or Olympus E410?

    Dear CSers,

I am a new to DSLR cameras, looking to buy one soon. Am currently looking at the Nikon D40x & Olympus E410. I have gone through similiar threads relating to these 2 models, but still quite undecided. Hope to get more feedback from current users. Thanks.

    Cheers,
    TW

Can you increase your budget and wait for the Olympus E510? It comes with an internal image stabilization feature that Nikon doesn't have. That is worth paying extra for.

I own a Nikon D40 now. But I remember few months back when I'm torn between Canon 400D and Nikon D40 but now I have absolutely no regret. Each camera has their own pros and cons, and I believe that you are very well aware of that. Haha. Well, I think to choose the right camera, you have to know what is that you are looking for? What is your budget? Range of lenses available? Etc etc. The most practical way is to get down to a camera shop and test out both models until you decide on one that you like more. I never made up my mind until I journey down and test out both the cameras. And I fell in love with Nikon D40 instantly...

E410 is smaller I think. But the right strap ring could be placed at a better spot.

Go and feel them in your hands... have you budgeted for the other accessories yet?

Consider also the other factors like lenses, flash system, etc...

You are not just buying a camera... you are buying a system. You have to decide not only about the camera body, but what else is available, e.g. lenses, flash, etc. In my opinion, there is really Nikon or Canon to consider because of what they provide.

For me, when i look thru the view finder, i know i want a Nikon. It seems bigger and brighter especially when compared to Oly cams. No offence to Oly cam users, its just my opinion.

I will pick D40 + 18-200 VR lens for image quality (much better dynamic range and high ISO performance), versatility and value for money.

I'm new to DSLR too and started with Olympus E330 and now E510. There are excellent cameras particularly the prof gradge lens optic. As a newbies, however, I find that the Olympus community is still rather small when compare with Canon and Nikon. Hence, it is more difficult to buy/sell Olympus lenses and other accessories if you need to explore various photographic techniques/skills.

Hence, I agree with Gerald that one should think of not just buying a camera but a system...

True, we should consider a good system and not just because a newly launched camera with many new features that we are attracted to. Olympus since launced the E3 not long ago had also stated that they would want Olympus to have a market share of up to 20%.
With Panasonic 4/3 system also coming in strongly, we shouldn't lose heart that the 4/3 community is small. Predictibly, it would be expandling.

I guess this thread if posted in nikon forum, you will get more people asking you to buy nikon but if posted in 4/3 olympus forum, you get a answer of buying olympus..

Since, like the D40, the D40x isn't (fully) compatible with certain older lenses available to Nikon, it takes away the typical response of getting the Nikon simply because of the available lenses. You must buy newer lenses to get full functionality. In my opinion, this is a good thing since you've less of a chance to get old rubbish.

The D40x is a nice, light body and is almost the same size as the E-410.

The E-410 is a good body and based on features alone, it's quite a bit better than the D40x. The dust reduction filter is the best of any on the market and I can personally assure its effectiveness in 3.5 years of shooting with an E-1. The Live View is another feature that can't be matched for those stepping up from a compact camera. There are plenty of lenses available at this point, as well as third party flash units and battery packs, etc.

I can't decide for you, but they're similar enough that you should take some time to try them both with your own flash memory card and see what's best for you. Look at what's available for each because with digital bodies, time moves quickly.

That is a somewhat radical view.

I have used Canon, Nikon, and Oly cameras.

Currently I choose to keep Nikon(for its superior flash and superb prime lenses) and Oly (for the beautiful out-of-camera jpegs and lighter, cheaper 2.0 and 2.8 lenses) systems.

Ironically, if I have to choose only one system, I would choose Canon because it stands in the middle in the pros and cons.

One has to choose based on individual preference and shooting styles, no system is clearly superior or for that matter, clearly inferior.

How about the Canon EOS 400D ? It has more features than the D40x like 9 point AF system, Dust reduction and the sensor which turns the screen off when you place the camera to your eye. Plus the 400D has instant access to settings like ISO, AF, White Balance, etc. whereas you'd have to go through all the menus on the D40x. And also, the 400D usually wins all the entry-level shootouts in terms of image quality and overall. My friend was also considering the D40x but in the end went for the 400D
