I second Hawaiisg suggestion. Epson printers are usually ink guzzlers and the R1800's B&W still doesnt look very neutral to me. I love Epson's matte paper though. Canon's Pro9000 B&W has a lot to be desired.

Well there are a lot of factors to consider when making prints but to make life easier, I printed my B&W pics using the default settings and my eyes tend to sway towards the HP B9180.

for b/w matte - hp's b9180 is really good. it also comes with bigger catridges (27ml compared to 14ml in epson 2400). hp's adv satin matte or hahnemuhle's art papers wd be good for b/w works. i tried ilford pearl and found results are v.good too.

epson 2400 spore price is higher than b9180. i bought b9180 from pic & pixels in funan, only they seem to have this printer in spore. cathy is having epson printers. both shops can show u sample a3+ prints, look thro them also b4 deciding.

If u want a large format printer, consider the Epson R1390... it's pretty good value... around $600... prints up to A3+... More expensive with Hi-Gloss ink is the R1800... and still more expensive is the semi-pro R2400 with K3 inks...

To be honest... any printer with 6 or more inks would do. Even a 5 ink ones are not bad. Its more about the paper than the printer itself.

You want excellent b&w + excellent color prints on both gloss & matte --> R2400. there is no other choice.

R1800 also decent as it has a light black... for b+w u need dedicated black - at least a black and a light black or grey to reproduce max tonality in your prints...

Hi TME,

can you elaborate more on why B9180 is better than epson in b/w printing?

Was the comparisons done using same paper and same paper profile? How abt the drivers used for the printing? Was it the original printer driver or third party driver used for laying the inks? Any third party inks used?

I'm not on any side, but just would like to seek your opinions.

Thanks.
