    Default 18-135 or 18-200 VR

    Dear All,

I am new in this forums and will need some advice from your guys

I just got a Nikno D80 not long ago. I am think should I keep the 18-135 that comes along with it or should I sell it and get myself the 18-200 with VR? If so how much you think I can get for the 18-135?? and how much will the 18-200 VR cost??
Or should I keep the 18-135 and get the 70-300 with VR??

    Thanks for your help

    hey,

the 18-200 VR costs about 1.2k+ new and the 18-135 cost about $400 2nd hand. frankly, the 18-200 VR is a good lens but i think the 18-135mm is good enough as long you dont need the VR.

keep the 18-135 and buy the 70-200 instead, dun waste money on the 18-200 which you will sell away later.

depends on ur needs. u are looking a 2 very different lens.

the 18-135 is good for basic stuff.
the 18-200 is good for travels.

look at ur budget and needs. go to the cam shop and try it out.

i dont think the extra 65mm of zoom will be critical in your decision. but do remember that the optics of the 18-200mm apparently arnt as up to the mark. its just great because of the VR. and at 200mm it comes in pretty useful sometimes.

The best option for you will be to follow ramboo24's approach of getting the 18-70 and the 70-300VR. Just bear in mind that you will have to swop lenses.

Sell off your 18-135 for about $400 and you will have to top up only about $600-700.

I use both the 18-200 and the 70-200. They are very different lenses and many times people make the silly mistake of comparing the 2 and saying that the 18-200 is softer. Of course it will be softer in such an unbalanced test. The 18-200's strength is that it is a one lens solution for holidays and trips where swapping lenses is not an option or just not practical. I find it very useful and worth the premium in price and cost in the slight loss of quality in that sense. It still produces stunning photos if used with skill and common sense.

Just have a look at this link below of a real photographer's use of the 18-200 and ask yourself if you have even used 1% of the 18-200's ability:-

My 17-55 and 70-200 will always be on my D200 for critical shots and for low light situations. Recognise that every lens has its specific purpose and IQ comparisons alone are not a true measure of a lens true value.

See my benchmark of the 18-200VR vs the renown 17-55/2.8 in Nikon sub-forum. You see that it isn't really that bad for the money.

No point selling the 18-135 for an 18-70 because the image quality is about the same. Doesn't make sense at all.

It makes sense if he is getting a 70-300 to complement the 18-70 and to help offset the cost. makes a hell of a lot of financial and logical sense.

hmm.. i've got the 18-55 kit lens and i must say its very very very worth it for the price! for $120 used, you dont find a lens that can do close up product shots at twice the price. and the 18mm end of the lens is a bonus when you go walking around on the street.

imo, the 18-70mm is alittle pricey for that little extra zoom, i'd get a 18-55mm and the 70-300mm VR. sounds like a killer combo, both for price and quality.

point taken that the 18-55 is a good lens, but its super plastic-ky...really to the max, but if that does not bother you, then its a fine lens!i started off with the 18-55 and was really satisfired with it, but when i switched to the 18-70, it was a totally different feeling..hahaha..

well, it will save you a good $250. im not too worried about plastic construction as long as it doesnt feel like its about to fall appart. the AF S is really quiet and the built although not metal is still much better than the canon counterpart. zoom rings are tight and have a nice feel to it. my only qualm would be about the focus ring being alittle light.

    Dear All,

Thank you for all your reply and I find them all very helpful.
The reason I was thinking of getting the 18-200 VR is because of the VR as I don't have a very stable hand and my photo always comes out bad when I zoom in.
Anyway, can anyone tell me where is the best palce to go try out the lens?? (18-70,18-200VR and 70-300VR)and what is the cost like? I am very new and don't know many people in this area. Will be very helpful if I can get some guide before I go into a wrong shop and pay the wrong price. Many thank and may all of you have a good week ahead.

If you're selling the 18-135 as 2nd hand and getting the 18-70 new, it's just like a one-to-one exchange. If you're buying the 18-70 used, why should you trade in a brand new 18-135 for a used 18-70 just for an extra $100 to buy the 70-300. Just save a little bit longer you'll be able to cover back that $100.

AFAIK, the lens is still on back order. Try calling the shops (AP, CP, Lords, TK, etc) to ask and see how long is their back order list and if it's not too long a queue, place an order and see if you can get it on the next shipment.

Otherwise, I would say stick with the 18-135 for the time being.
