Not an expert but would recommed Nikon AF-S 24-85mm f3.5-4.5G IF-ED for a start.

I'm using a AF 28-105 f3.5-4.5D IF. Cheaper than the AFS and has macro too.

I have the 24-85G F3.5-4.5.. generally ok lens if you are on a budget..

Recently I got my hands on the AF-D 24-85 F2.8-4 Micro lens...
Wow... a world of difference... Nice

Hmm.. read the review pcman linked to and it favoured the AFS over the older 24-85G... maybe I miss the macro function which AF-S and the F2.8 which is missing in the AFS... of course the AFS is supposed to be better build than the AF-D... which I haven't used it enough to realise yet

28-105 is a good starting lens already, but on D100 you may find it not wide enough due to FLM. I suggest you to get AF 18-35D or AFS 17-35 (depend on your budget) as your wide angle lens, no point getting 24-85 range since you already got 28-105.

I'm more a people & portrait person, so the FOV crop doesn't really bother me. Eyeing the 70-200 VR, slurp.

I also like tele-lenses, sure 70-200VR is the best but with 3.6k you still have to join the waiting list. Better hold your horse for another 2-3 months. If not AFS 80-200 not bad either, Prime has one 2ndhand for sale.

Prime is a bit too pricey for 2nd hand i think. Saw the lens, the hood is a bit beaten up.

Hood is not critical. But you can try using that as an excuse to drive the price down

the AFS has a better build than the AF-D 24-85 f/2.8-4? i don't think so... i got the latter which i've been using for donkey years and i've also tried the AF-S version. the AF-D is better in terms of material used and build quality. heavier too, which is a boon for some. but then the price tag's bigger too.

So what does AF-S mean?? I know the AFS lens have FTM (Full Time Manual) focusing... what are the other differences??

Among the 2 24-85s, the AF-D does have better build quality. The AF-S one is rather plasticky. AF-S merely mean it has a silent-wave motor and has FTM. The AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G is a budget lens btw.
