Anyone has used or comments on this lens? I'm thinking up upgrading my current 35~105mm f/3.5~4.5 to this lens.
Is that recommended? Btw, may I know what would be a reasonable 2nd hand price for the above mentioned lens. Thank in advance. ![]() |

There are two versions of this lens...
AF 35-70mm f/2.8 and AF 35-70mm f/2.8D The second (later) version incorporates the "D" chip for TTL metering for Flash Photography. Both the D and non-D versions are optically superb! It's was one of the most reliable and widely used standard zoom lens by many photogs. The only down side to this lens is that it is prone to zoom-creep. This is an old lens design which has a push-pull zoom system, different from the current ring-zoom system. This means that with the lens fully extended, when you tilt the lens upwards, the weight of the elements and lens barrel causes it to creep back slightly. Depending on the wear & tear of the lens, this creep can be very slight or in some cases, it almost slams down to the fully retracted position! Definitely something to check when you view your prospective 2nd-hand purchase. I personally own the D version and have had it for coming 10-years now. It is still a great performer and I seriously can't complain about this constant f/2.8 aperture lens. I'd recommend it purely for its optics alone! |

I have the Nikkor 35-70/2.8 D.
It is a superb lens, the sharpest normal range zoom I have ever seen, probably because its range is short (2x). But there're two downside: - Not nice for portraiture, over-corrected, the bokeh is like a ring instead of bloomy solid circle. - Push-pull zoom, some people may not be comfortable with it. |

2ndhand around 600~700 depend on condition, I like this lens but bit difficult to find mint condition one in the market. Most of the time I find the push pull zoom creeping (very loose) and rotating front element is a big disadavantage for cokin filter user.
