D40 has no motordrive to AF..... instead it only uses the AF motor inside the lens.. the speed is entirely dependant on the AF-S lens ...
i used my gf's D40 with a couple of AF-S lens before, the focusing speed is quite ok. In fact using the same lens on my D70s, i dun feel much difference. i tried AF-S 18-55, AF-S 17-80, AF-S 70-200vr... As for S2pro, i have no idea. never used before. but if S2pro motordrive is comparable to D70s, i suspect that it might have a near par performance with D40... and the iso performance of her D40 is really much better than my D70s respectably.... my D70s at iso 640 is the max it can go already, at iso 800 noise is pretty obvious. but the D40 at 800 is still fairly ok. At iso 1600 on the D40, it is a bit worse than the D70s iso 800... but sadly, D40 cant adjust adjust iso is 1/3 steps. it only goes from 200,400,800,1600,3200.... D70s can go iso 640,800,1000,1250,1600 etc.. and another problem i feel is too many things are centralized in the menu... got to keep going into the menu to access them and change them.. haha....my gf use her D40 for a few days, she also feel the hassle to keep having to go the menu.. :P lastly, its really hard to ignore the size of the D40 and D70s... D70s is physicall big and feels much heavier and solid than the D40.. but D40 is really compact and light, can play as a pns :P ok i digresss enuff already.. go sleep liao byebye hope the info will be useful if u are thinking of getting D40
