Hi all Nikon techies out there.
I will be travelling and and thinking of having light weight zoom lens. My friend has this zoom lens which I THINK is a G lens (no aperture ring) with range of 70mm-300mm, and F3.5-5.6 (not very sure about all the exact settings) Anyway, it's light and I am thinking of getting something along this line for myself for travel. I have used the 80-200mm F2.8 many times for different occasions and have come to a conclusion that I am not going to carry THAT as i go mountain trekking or exploration or stuff like that. Further more, I often get cramps using that darn lens. Could anyone suggest a lens for my needs and it's estimate pricing (or i will just use the model name you give me and do e-quote with cathy) Or you could give a page with all the nikon lens and reviews of them |

value for money and performance : Tamron 28-300 XR
www.popphoto.com has a review of this lens. Comes out pretty good for a lightweight all rounder. Cost approx SGD650. |

If you are looking for a new lens, i guess uyou dun have much choice. 70-300G lens and a 70-300D lens are available.
70-300mm G lens is not very good in constrcution but it's lighter. The D model is more expensive. If you dun mind a 2nd hand, i would recomend a 70-210 (push pull) think it it F4-5.6. (should be 200+ near 300)

I agree with JavaGUru that the Tamron superzooms are ideal for travel - one lens fits all and you dont ahve to mess ard with dust n grit getting inside as u are changing lenses in the field. plus if u going mountain trekking im sure u'd want some nice scenic shoots, thus a 70-x00 wont be appropriate.
Alternatively u can try the tamron 28-200xr, that would be cheaper and only cost you $350.

What about the Sigma 28-300 f 3.5-6.3 hyperzoom AF? Anybody used this? Is it any good? Compared to nikkor 70-300 mm ED?
thanks. |

Oh yeah...they give u a nice hood FOC. Great when travelling to protect and have the camera dangling arround.

Hmmm .. kinda forgot about this thread...
Anyway, I am still looking. My budget is around $300 and below. Is this lens good? -> http://www.sigmaphoto.com/html/pages/28_300_35_63.htm |

do you need the focal length range between 200-300mm? b'cos by ur budget of $300, i'm afraid that you can get only the 28-200mm XR from Tamron. btw, good luck for the exams. |

After a chat with Prismatic, maybe I would settle for the AF zoom nikkor 70-300 f4- 5.6 G. Am trying to get a quote from Alan Photo and Cathy now.
Does anyone have experience with this lens? |

Assuming that the G is similar to the non-G in performance, this is what I can advise :
- It's a very nice lens for the money, sharp & contrasty. - Don't shoot at the extremes. That means fully wide open at full zoom ... then the "sharp & contrasty" bit falls off the equation. - Don't put a TC on it. I have it, and still use it on occasion ... sometimes the 80-200mm f/2.8 is just too cumbersome to lug around. Still better than what a friend of mine has ... the old 300mm f/2.8 :-) HTH, Eric |

Most got it as a kit lens and seldom use it. You can't tell it apart from a new one.
