Default Windows explorer has stopped working!

Just installed Win Vista yesterday and worked fine till i started getting this "Windows explorer has stopped working" message this morning, then another window comes up and says Windows explorer is restarting, and it just loops over and over so i cant access anything in my folders on my DELL pc.

i tried to do a system restore from the boot up but it says i have no restore points, Please someone tellme how to fix this!!
    This is terrible ... Vista

Do a factory restore, if it is available?

But that erases all data, so I hope you backed it up.. =D Must have done something, I mean, Microsoft -is- wonky, but you need something to trigger that wonkiness.

and spend the whole day waiting on the phone?....
did a search on the problem and was surprised that there were also thousands of ppl having the said problem in the net...... wonder why MS didnt do a patch immediately.
Why are we spending so much $ on a OS and still need to spend so much time trying to fix the bugs for them?....

This how-to involves editing the Windows Registry. Please be very cautious if you are not a techie. The registry can make or break your system; do only what is described within this document! The following error is received when trying to open folders that contain pictures or thumbnails:

'Windows Explorer has stopped working' -AND/OR- 'Windows Explorer is restarting'

    Problem Event Name: InPageError
    Error Status Code: c000009c

Windows Explorer is crashing everytime you open a folder that has images or thumbnails because somehow the thumbnail index for the images became corrupted. Where Vista should have been designed to automatically regenerate the corrupted data, it crashes instead... go Vista!

This is very easy and doesn't require any additional software. Luckily, Windows has what is required to fix this problem. Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't have the where-with-all to make it consumer-friendly! What you're going to do is clear the thumbnail cache and temporary files, then run SFC (System File Checker), which will attempt to fix any corrupted files.

NOTE: If you're not a techie please skip this version & refer to the 'Newbie' version below.

    1) Open registry > HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Bags > delete numerically named subkeys
    2) Run > %appdata% > delete the 'Windows Photo Gallery' folder (check inside 'Windows' or 'Microsoft')
    3) Disk Cleanup > All files > Check all items except 'Setup Log Files'
    4) Run > cmd (as administrator) > sfc /scannow

    1) On the start menu where it says 'Start Search' type 'regedit' (no quotes)
    2) In the window that opens (Registry Editor) navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Shell/Bags'
    3) Delete any folders under 'Bags' that are numerically named (1, 2, 3, etc.)
    4) Again, on the start menu where it says 'Start Search', type '%appdata%' (no quotes) and hit ENTER
    5) In the folder that opens delete the 'Windows Photo Gallery' may be under 'Microsoft' or 'Windows'
    6) Hit WIN + E (opens 'My Computer'), right-click on the C:\ drive > Properties
    7) Click the 'Disk Cleanup' button > 'Files from all users on this computer'
    8) Check all the boxes in the window that pops up except 'Setup Log Files'; click 'OK'
    9) Once more, on the start menu where it says 'Start Search', type 'cmd' (no quotes) and hit ENTER
    10) Close the window that opens (this is just to add a link to the Start Menu)
    11) Find 'cmd.exe' or 'Command Prompt' in the Start Menu, right-click > 'Run as administrator'
    12) Enter 'sfc /scannow' and hit ENTER

NOTE: The last step caused my system to crash at the very end of the operation, but did not cause any problems. The system rebooted fine and I can now browse all folders without any problems.
