    thought you have the 707?

anyway, the choices are pretty limited for 5MP with big zoom:
    Sony 717
    Sony 707
    Minolta 7Hi
    Minolta 7i
    Nikon 5700

You might need to get a big waist pouch to fit any of them. Also for 707, 717 and 5700 (if you can't find the battery grip), you may need to get spare proprietary batteries as backup. The last 3 cameras are also poor in terms of battery life (except when you pair the 5700 with the battery grip). For 5700, you need a special adaptor to fit filters.

Any reason why that is has to be 5 MP? If you can settle for 4MP, Canon G3 is a good choice for having long lasting battery. Attaching the teleconvertor will give you 7x zoom.

Must be able to mount lens? Unless you are satisfied with just teleconvertors and wideconvertors, the only option is DSLR. Having to add lens would means it will be heavy. It will weight at least 1 kg with the lens attached.

S602Z is another good alternative with resolution similar to the G3 and the Minolta 7i or 7Hi (arguably the 5MP with the lowest resolving power among the ones mentioned). Good battery life using standard AA batteries (as good as G3 or 717 using the new Sanyo 2100mAH NiMH AA).

try olympus c50 if you don't mind:-
    1) less than 5x optical zoom
    2) not able to mount lenses/filters.

    why I recommend it:
    1) Definitely not heavy and can be used by ladies
    2) Fit in a waist pouch
    3) manual control for Aperture and shutter
    4) uses 2 x AA batteries

If you want a Bigger size digi cam... then is Olympus C5050 or Fuji 602 loh... (I'm not a fan of Canon G3 becos expensive batteries compare to the Oly/Fuji)

7hi is a good choice since it can support AA batteries, 5700 would be good if (read my sig) you can find the MB-E5700 (which is stockless in SG).

The 717 has the 2nd longest lasting life compared to G3, can consider also.
