Default 0.45x wide angle convertor

I've not used such a convertor before, but I'm interested. If I mount this onto a 18-55 kit lens, does it effectively turn the 18mm into a 11.7mm wide (Before the crop factor) with the perspective similar to that of the Sigma 12-24mm on the wide end (mounted on a full-frame/film cam)?

Cause if this can be done, then it's a really cheap way of getting the ultra-wide angle with the exaggerated perspective to boot.

Anyone with sample photos to show of this combination?

Yup. The quality will definitely suffer, but control?

Does this affect AF or AF accuracy? It's in the form of a filter, am I right?

I've considered converters for quite a while too.

Generally, I feel that wide angle converters tend to have too much distorsion for my liking (unless of course you go for the high quality/price models), Telephoto converters are more acceptable.

But the key point that's stopping me from slapping one on is the weight.

High quality converters tend to be heavy cos of all the glass that's in there and they'll put a lot of stress on the focusing mechanism of the lens (unless your lens has an internal focusing mechanism)

Something to think about, other than the image quality

depends on the make, have seen some screwed on and some are slot over ("tight fit")
