Default sun set with buildings - how to capture ?

i m a newbie, and going to cambodia to capture sunset scenaries ...

To illustrate what i meant, here is a youtube url

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WQ7IDZ-Wigs

This is just a short moving picture. How to i capture a human face with sunset behind it such that the human face do NOT turn dark / black ?

Do i need special lens or filter, etc ?

and yes, do i need flash ?

    i m using a canon 30d dslr ...

yes you need a flash. How strong a flash you need will depend on how far you are from your subject. I would suggest you get an external flash.

Your question is confusing. The title says "sun set with buildings - how to capture?" Then you asked about taking portraits at sun set. Which is which??

    Sorry , for clarifications.

scene 1 - sunset behind buildings
    - no human face, want to capture buildings, with "colorful" sun set

scene 2 - sun is behind the human face
    - wish to avoid human face turn black

the range of exposure for two subjects is very great (one is too bright, another in too dark), camera won't be able to reproduce it as like human eyes see,

scene 1, when the sky is just nice but the build will be dark, solution: shoot two frame and merge in photoshop.

scene 2, solution: expose for the sky and use flash to light the people

    try this with buildings.

shoot at an angle and wait till the sunset is somewat ending, tis may not be wat u want ...
then try shooting at f11 or higher. maybe can get the effect u want.

scene 1, meter the sky near the sun and shoot as per normal with small aperture like f8 or smaller

scene 2, same metering as above with flash fill in.
