Upgrading from a what? Kit lens?

I actually find kit lenses are very suitable for walkabout. I believe they were intended to be that way. If excellent image quality is not of a major concern... one of those all-in-one 18-200 superzooms would be the way to go (although I personally would not recommend it).

I think the best step for you now is to...

    1) Shoot as much as possible with your current lens.
    2) Identify what is the range that you shoot most often at.
    3) Upgrade/Buy additional lens accordingly.

Because it seems to me you really haven't got a clue on what you exactly require for your needs.

Yes bro... upgrading from kit lens... spent a weekend using the kit lens and I find that the zoom falls a little short... hopefully can get a little more flexibility... I was thinking maybe something like what ihub88 suggested 24-105mm would be ideal... but not sure what the f4 means...

What is your own budget? How much are you willing to fork out?? No use suggesting all the good and expensive lenses and you can't afford it.

    My 2 cents worth...

Please don't take offence with this reply.

My suggestion to you is to first go and get a book called "Understanding Exposure: How to Shoot Great Photographs with a Film or Digital Camera" by Bryan Peterson.

You need to understand the concepts of aperture, shutter speed, ISO etc. There are lots of photographs in that book too - its not just all theory.

Then figure out what kind of photography interests you most. Based on that you will come to know what kind of focal lengths and apertures are needed to shoot photographs that will interest you.

Next comes the question of how much you are willing to spend on the lens.

Are you looking for Canon lenses only or 3rd party lenses will do ?

My best walkabout lens maynot be the best walkabout lens for you - as our requirements would be totally different. Also, there is no "one size fits all" lens from Canon.

You might also want to read the Canon lens reviews at www.the-digital-picture.com before deciding on your next purchase.

    Hope this helps.

the f4 refers to maximum aperture of that particular lens i believe. that means how wide the lens can open. its also allows you to shoot at f4 throughout the entire range of zoom.

Thanks bro!! That's good advice... seriously, as a newbie in this hobby, I have problems finding the real info I need as there are too many threads here in CS, but a general lack of stickies which point to the real info I need... confusion arises further when sifting through the numerous threads...

Can advice where I can get the book you mentioned?

    Thanks!!

The mother of all newbie threads is zoossh's thread... (its a sticky in this section itself, but somehow misses the attention of many people)

    http://forums.clubsnap.com/showthread.php?t=245883

You can get the book from any of the leading bookshops - Borders, Kinokuniya, Popular (Bras Basah) or you can get it at a bookstore called Riceball in the basement of Adelphi building (near cityhall mrt).

if you do a search for riceball in clubsnap, you will get their address too. If I am not wrong, zoossh has got the address in his thread too... you just have to have the patience to plough through his post. there's tonnes of very useful information in it - and some which is quite specific to our singapore audience...

It will be like 38.4-168mm lens in 35mm film camera. In my taste, it is not wide enough. I prefer something like 28-135mm lens for 35mm film camera, or 17.5-85mm for 1.6x crop factor digital camera.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Arto.
