Canon S30 is a good cam for street shooting. Small and discreet. Get up close, shoot from the hip. Make sure flash is turned off. Shoot in continuous mode, so you have more shots to choose from (and hopefully they will be better focussed). If noticed, smile and walk away.

I do share the same feeling, that's why I never venture into this area of street photography. And I always admire and respect StreetShooter expertise in this field.
