Default Price of 512MB CF in SIngapore

Would appreciate some feedback on the price of 512MB CF cards (Type I) in Singapore. Please list brand, price, and shop.

I have a 2-day trip to Singapore next week and would like to get this item if the price is better than in US.

So far the lowest I can get in US is SimpleTech 512MB for US$89 after all the discounts and rebates.

Thanks!

Roy, US stores seems to have alot of those discounts/rebates stuff, although I hear some of those rebates take ages to reach you. Otherwise, that SimpleTech 512Mb CF card at US$89 looks like a very good deal!!

hmm.... maybe roy can buy a couple of SimpleTech 512MB to resell when he's back.... I doubt most people would mind paying less than S$200 for a fast 512MB card.

Thanks for all the input!

Seems like the SimpleTech is quite a good deal here. US$89 converts to ~S$160+.

I have purchased quite a number of items here with mail-in rebates, and so far I have received the rebate cheques within 3 months after the purchase. Also, online purchases are tax free most of the time and if I shop a round a little, I can usually get free shipping.

SimpleTech's speed rating on a 1394 CF reader is around 22X read, 15X write, according to the DPREVIEW article (Digital Film Comparison) dated Oct 2001. This should at least stay the same, if not improved, adter more than 1 year. Back then the price was US$400!

OT: I will not be bringing my baby for this trip, as this is a business trip to China.

Latest update on SimpleTech CF price in US.

Dell having 10% discount on all memory until Mar 27.
The SimpleTech 512MB's price after discount is US$118.03.
After $50 mail in rebate the final price becomes US$68, which is roughly S$122.

The rebate is limited to 1 per address. So even if I buy for CS members, I cannot get the $50 rebate for you.

Furthermore I cannot confirm when is my next visit to Singapore. So unless you can wait for 1~3 months for me to bring it over on my net trip, yo might be better off getting it in Singapore.

Dell won't ship to SG rite?
may be can ask my friend in US to help, since CF card is light, can just send in an envelope.

btw, can give me more details on the ordering procedure?

I don't think Dell US will ship to Singapore, because there is a Dell Singapore website (which does not carry CF cards).

Ordering is simple. Just like any online stores.

If you are getting your friend to help, you can make it easier for him/her by charging the item to your visa card and have it shipped to your friend's address. Your friend will have to claim the rebate on your behalf, which will normally take 6 to 8 weeks for processing. The rebate will come in a US checque which will be sent to your friend's address.

The discount from Dell is applied automatically when you check out (make payment). For the SimpleTech rebate, your friend will have to download the rebate form, print it, fill in the details, and mail it with the receipt and the UPC label to SimpleTech.

Thanks for your info...went to Dell.com and search for "simpletech compact flash" and the mail in rebate still on.

but then deadline is 31 Mar which means my friend have to send in the rebate form and reach Dell by 31March or i have to order before 31 March???

but even without $50 rebate, it is still much cheaper than any 512MB CF in singapore.

for the cheque, can put my friend's name so that he can bank in the cheque in US? cos if the cheque use my name, SG bank will charge a lot for processing

The purchase has to made in your friend's name, and shipped to your friend's address. As such, the rebate cheque will be addressed to your friend also.

When making the purchase, your friend can charge it to your visa card. Or he can pay everything for you and youy can settle with him later. The latter seems like a more "clean" solution.

Dell's 10% discount offer is on until Mar 27. SimpleTech's rebate offer is until Mar31. As long as you place ther order before Mar27, you will be eligible for both offers.

icic...discussing with my friend now....

so as long as i place my order before Mar 27, even he only recieve the CF one week later, he still can send in the rebate form?

btw, if i choose "3-5 day Ground Delivery" will it be too late for the rebate? or doesn't make any different if i order before Mar 27?

Rebate periods in the US are usually tied to the date of purchase instead of the date of delivery. There will normally be another deadline for sending in the rebate, which willl be another few weeks after the rebate period expires. You might want to chack the SimleTech website for more details. Dell's websitre states that the rebate forms has to be mailed within 10 days after the date of purchase. So if you have picked 3-5 day ground shipping, you have only a few days after the delivery to mail in the rebate form. Here's the link to the rebate form:

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/rebates/A0050601.pdf

The CF card is very light and should be able to be mailed in an envelop using normal post and cost a few dollars only. For bigger items, you have to take into the consideration the shipping cost.

I was wondering whether would you take payments through courier agencies, e.g. Western Union.

I know that there are a number of shops in Singapore do offer Western Union services. So for example, if I wanted to buy a Lexar 1GB 16X write Compact Flash Type I card, I could just go to western union and mail you money through this agency and you can pick it up in any western union store in Seattle.

If CS members or you are willing to do this, would you be able to buy CF cards in the US and then ship it here? Obviously, you would have to make sure that you receive payment first before making purchase.

Hi,

Sorry, I am afraid I am not considering starting such exporting services.

As to Wai,

please note that SimleTech rebate offer requires the rebate form to be posted wihtin 10 days of the date of purchase. Ask your friend to mail the rebate form with the receipt and UPC label as soon as he receives the shipment from Dell.

There is a good chance that SimpleTech will reject the rebate request even if it is sent within 10 days. Probably a trick to reduce the rebate payment as some people will simply forget about persuing. This just happened to my friend who bought a SimpleTech CF card from Amazon. The reason given for the rejection was that he did not mail the rebate form within 10 days - but he actually did. He had to call them up to clarify before they accepted the rebate request.
