(damn i feel so silly for saying so much)
i still remember the heydays when i used to go to #clubsnap on galaxynet.. and i used to have a forum account here. after i quitted photography as a hobby to shift my focus to other obsessions, i never did return to take a look much.
these days photography in singapore on the whole had taken a huge shift. with technological advancements, equipments become much more sophisticated and better priced... everyone's touting a dslr these days, not those days when i only had a eos 500 film slr and developing film burnt holes in my teenage pockets. didnt had a chance to get anyone to comment on my photography back then either.. i probably think i lost the negatives and the prints themselves too come to think abt it now.
photography itself is a gratifying hobby, it gives one a sense of achievement and self actualization being able to capture a moment in time and present it the right way. but nobody can do that without the guidance of those who had been in the field for a long time. books dont tell you everything. if everyone followed books, its like the education in singapore, everyone's factory moulded and are jacks of all trades, masters of none.
i believe photography itself is like an art, we are artists, but we do not paint with brushes. if adequate effort had been put in to compose a picture and effort had been put in considering the lighting, exposures and stuff, i believe credit should be due where it deserves, and not just a full load of negative criticism. criticism is necessary, but giving good feedback is important as well.. (anyone did management here? lol).
if you were to look at the clubsnap forums on the whole, its a huge place, there are many people. from hobbyists to commercial photographers. but it seems that these days, there seems to be a slight antagonism against newbies (or nOobs like we call it here), and that for simpler questions, or some of their new works, they often receive harsher replies though.
not that it has happened but an analogy would be like...
"someone takes a picture of an apple and puts it on clubsnap"
- possible replies
1) hey.. maybe you can consider working on what you're trying to portray? that would make pictures more interesting.. you could probably go up a couple of stops and probably change the angle and blah..
2) what are you trying to say here?? lighting out. exposure out. boring shot.
type 2 replies are more common though. both ways people would get the point, its just how some things are put forward. if the forums could be more encouraging, and a little more altruistic, then clubsnap would be a much better place.
chezburgr i can haz?
I post a lot, but I don't get as much comments as I want to. Sometimes I just feel like posting up snapshots to get attention and maybe my other shots will be noticed too.
Some more, I really don't mind brutality. You can do it DP style or what style and tell me to jump off buildings, chop off my head, or get fed to Afghan girl ghosts. My skin is thick.
Luckily I have thick skin.
I personally feel that AD HOMINEM attacks (attacks on the person, and not his blardy art or words) should be PUNISHED SEVERELY.
Example up there. Because there is no room for that, when you don't even know the person except through a computer screen. Logic, no logic, the end result when you think, is the same.
