Default how bad is your distortion

in the 17-55 F2.8 IS?

Mine's quite bad at 17mm and when i shot close to the subject
Is this normal? My old tamron 17-50 dun seem to be so bad.
Or did i have a bad copy?

Brother, it should be normal as we expect..But the best you could give us a photo to tell..But theoritically, 17mm gives a lot of barrel distortion..Er..how to get rid of that..I bet many many people don't want to try because they know it is its nature .Difficult to do anything with it..

Maybe you would like to give the commercial software a try. There is quite a few out there to correct such distortion.

ALL lenses in this range would have some barrel distortion in a way or another, it's this focal length's uniqueness.

instead of correcting it, why not work within it? =)

focals lengths at the wide angle will tend to have barrel distortion, just like how some teles have pin-cushion..

it is inevitable, due to the shape of the lens elements, and the way light focuses on the sensor... it can be minimised.. but very hard to eliminate... but maybe u can put up some test shots so that others who have the same lens can compare and tell if ur lens is a bad copy...
