Hi everyone,
I have been very happily using a Canon S80 for more than a year, but it recently died on me and the repair estimate is ridiculously high. I have been very pleased with the S80 since day one and never found the need to replace it...until now ! Unfortunately, it is not sold at stores anymore. Can anyone tell me what has superceded the Canon S80 now that it is obsolete ? Shops tell me, nothing has replaced the S80 yet. If the successor to the S80 has not been released yet, any idea what it's like and when will be released ? Alternatively, can you recommend a camera that is similarly as compact and offers the same picture quality or better than the S80. Truly appreciate all your advice. Thanks. PS. I am now trying to buy a used Canon S80 for the interim....so if you know of one available, please do give me a shout at 90010676. Cheers ![]() |

I used to own the S series of canon camera as well. There is no replacement models for S80 so far. What I did was to upgrade to the G series!

Already have a DSLR, but I find that I use the S80 most of the time.
I'm looking for a compact little camera that will fit in the diaper bag ... something that does not take up much space, which my wife or I can whip out for quick shots of our little ones ![]() Thanks |

G series is not a DSLR. G7 can be quite compact as well. that is if you compare that to a DSLR...

Thanks for your input and I am familiar with the G series ![]() I had the G6 before, then sold it and got a Nikon D200. But the S80 has been like a cam for the wife, which fit perfectly in the diaper bag and we find ourselves using it more than the D200 ![]() So, our priority now, is something small compact with a 28mm wide angle lens which will fit in the diaper bag.... The G7 is a lil too big unfortunately ![]() To date, I have not received any replies or offers for a used S80..... I have been told to consider the IXUS 850IS instead. As such, I may have to look at an 850IS now. Cheers |

Yup, you're so right about high shutter speeds being critical in kids that NEVER EVER keep still when taking shots ![]() Not familiar with Fuji cams or the cam you recommend, but I will certainly have a look at the F31FD. Thanks very much and Amen to Isa 40:31 |

i use the f30 myself. recently printed some shots taken at ISO1600 indoors at 4R size. on print, u can't even see the noise! of course, it's only a small 4R print, but still, the results are quite commendable. |

fellow S80 user here.. really wish would Canon continue on the Sxx line.. the wide angle lens makes it quite an unique compact, though many other companies have followed suit.. 24mm eq for its replacement would be nice..

How abou the Panasonics, they too have one model with 28mm?
It does not mean that I am trying to lure others to Pana as I myself own the S2 IS as well as the FD series AE-1 and a Pentax Z-20. |

Isa40:31 is right - F31fd is the one to go for. I would not buy any other compact. Even though some have IS/VR that stabilise the handshake at slow shutter speeds, you can't use it cost the kids will move - so it is better to have good high ISO performance than IS/VR. $500 gets you the cam and 2GB of xD and a spare battery plus a few other things. Only small gripe is that the menu system is less friendly/intuitive than Canon. I have one and it beats my G2 hands down for sharpness and noise and gets close to 300D noise performance. Sharpness wise, it is better than the 300D with kit lens!! - serious. |

Hi ashivy,
You may want to dump the Canon ship and consider other brands, such as Panasonic. I used to be a Canon compact cam supporter but in recent months, I've opened up to other models. Cos Canon has kind of disappointed me. They are the leader in DSLR but very slow to produce features which other brands have in the compact cam arena. And with newer models it doesn't mean better. They just add minor this and that and call it another number as a new model. Seems like they are playing with consumers or fiddling with the compact digicam market? The 850IS has a 28mm wide end but it is reported to be not as sharp as it's previous model 800IS, which disappoints some. Looks wise, I also feel it's uglier at the back. As for good noise control, you can consider the F31fd, but it's at 36mm (i think) and far from wide if you like sweeping landscape shots. Actually, if you do a lot of prints, noise should not be that big an issue as most make it out to be. Panasonic cams are well-known for their terrible noise even at fairly low ISO. But that's when you see the images on screen blown up. At 4R prints, you'll see that noise is not such a big deal except for perhaps the highest of ISOs. I'm looking at Panasonic now, cos styling wise, they have very nice compacts, useful 28mm wide angle, and a list of other features which Canon lacks. |

Other brands, like Panasonic and Fuji, gives much greater value for their compact cameras. Hope Canon's future DSLRs will maintain their lead and delight us with great cameras as others are catching up rapidly. |

Hmm. The main gripe I have with Panasonic compacts is the ridiculous noise level at ISO400 and above. The Fuji beats any Panasonic compact in this respect.

Yes, they are noisy. Still, my Panasonic comes with a Leica lens that zooms beyond 400mm at f2.8. The LX series perform better.

I agree that in terms of its PnS offerings, Canon is good only for its looks. In terms of features I was quite impressed by the capabilities vs cost for the fuji F31fd

Hi all,
Thanks for all your advice. After much searching for a replacement S80, I went ahead with the Fuji F31FD. Apart from the wider lens and the aesthetics which the S80 offered ,the F31FD beats the S80 hands down in every other aspect. Insofar as picture quality is concerned, there is no comparison ! Most of our shots are taken indoors, I've never had it so easy before....literally point and shoot and the results are much sharper simply cos of the higher shutter speed. So most of our shots now are keepers ! So, thanks to Fuji and Isaiahfortythirtyone ....we now get more 'Fuji Moments' saved Cheers |
