my KM kit lens broke down recently
any good lens to reccommend? was initially looking at tamron 18-50 f/2.8, then yesterday at AP, the good sales guy reccommended Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5. said was sharper than the tamron. which is better huh? ![]() |

but i wonder if its my lens or the cokin filters i am using, no matter how i try, cannot get a nice star shape flare when shooting directly at the sun... only 1 big circle like the moon...

from most of the reviews, it seem like Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 to be sharper & better, especially for indoor and low light condition, but if you want the extra zoom length, get the Sigma 17-70mm

the Sigma got higher macro magnification (max. magnification of 1:2.3) compare to Tamron (max. magnification of 1:4.5)

tsk tsk. all becoming humble again. sometimes, is nice to sacrifice oneself by being arrogant, so that people can lambaste and flame at, just like me.
i can bring joy to people by failing, then people will be like "haha, that arrogant boy got owned!!", or something like that. somehow, people enjoy those kind of joy more than anything else. |

i got the sigma 17-70, and i can say its a worthy replacement.
in fact i feel 17-70, 17-50, 16-80 all worthy replacements. only restriction is ur wallet and the range u think u will most prob use...if u only use until 50mm then maybe better to get tamron 17-50. for me my 17-70 provides that extra bit of range that comes in really handy at times. image quality not bad either if u have 4 figure to spare, well...what r u waiting for? cow is mooing ![]()

i've always found the sigma lenses to be sharper than tamron (tokina seems best but i've only 1 of that) although tamron AF is faster than sigma.
here's a 18-125: http://cgi.ebay.com.sg/NEW-Sigma-18-...QQcmdZViewItem

I just bought a used Sigma 17-70mm to replace my kit lens and am quite satisfied with it. Although it's not 2.8 throughout, it's a good lens for general event shooting, where you most probably need to use a flash. The close minimum focus distance is really useful sometimes especially when you don't have the luxury to move backwards to focus. You can focus on objects almost as close as touching your lens filter! Sharpness is acceptable although I think the Tamron or the CZ (of course!) is better in this area. The strengths of this lens is the range (17-70), the aperture (twice as fast as the kit lens) and the close focus distance.

If you can afford it, get the CZ 16-80mm
