Default Need advise on Tasmania or Perth for June tour?

    Hi guys and gals,

I would be planning a trip to either Tasmania or Perth. Of course, i would be taking along my camera to snap scenic landscape along the way.

Some of my friends told me to avoid tasmania for the following reasons. Can you people help comment?

    1. You can only find acccomodation (motels) in areas near horbert city. That means if i decide to drive out of horbert to visit nature reserves, i need to always drive back to area near horbert cos i cannot find motel for a group of 4.

    2. Other than nature reserves, tasmania is basically a big city with nothing much to do.

I am hoping to go on a self-drive tour of group size=4 people. I would like to drive and stay along the journey in cheap motel just for the nite. I have 10 days to spare.

On the other hand, is perth self drive sort of like those of sydney to melbourne? I have done sydney to melbourne and i liked the drive and stay in motels way. Loved Formula One... cheap motel at 49bucks for 2. Love movement from one town to another town. love the mix of scenary, from beautiful nature landscape to beautiful old towns of its own character.

Oh ya, i like cold weather

Hope you can tell me more about selfdrive in tasmania or perth.

    thanks

I'm told that to see Tasmania properly, you need to self-drive and spend about 7 - 10 days there. Its big and there are lots of places to go to. Beautiful scenery, from my understanding but it will be harsh as it is in winter. Its certainly not one big city!

I've been to Perth a number of times and driven south quite a few times but only down as far to Margaret River, about 400 km from Perth. The drive is an easy drive, good scenery but be warned that it's the rainy season in June!

how harsh will the winter be in tasmania in June? Will there be snowing everywhere such that snow chains are necessary?

How rainy is it in perth in June?

bring a raincoat along.. ! i was caught in the rain in Perth during last July. The night was crazy cold... i was freezing like mad ! make sure u get a hotel with some heater in the room.. do not go out alone at night.. esp in Perth City.

Perth will be better if you like the countryside.
I have not personally toured the whole of Tasmania, so I can't really comment too much on it.

    For Perth attractions / stopover:

    If you head Northbound...
    1. Pinnacles
    2. Geraldton
    3. Monkey Mia
    4. Kalbarri
    5. Shell Beach
    6. Monkey Mia
    7. Pink Lake
    8. Broome

    and many more....

    If you head southwards....

    1. Fremantle
    2. Busselton (skip Bunbury)
    3. Rockingham (See enclosed penguins and seals)
    4. Margaret River
    5. Denmark
    7. Albany
    8. Valley of the Giants (Walpole area I think)

    and many more....

    If you head Eastwards....

    1. Wave rock..
    2. Gold mines...

Nope... doesn't really snow in Tasmania unlike Buller (Vic) and Kosciusko (NSW).
Try renting a 4WD (esp a manual one), you don't have to worry about any terrain.

Did my Bachelors in NSW and only had a saloon... a lot of problems with sand and rocks...

as long as not snowing, driving would be ok and safer. How cold will it be in tasmania at around 8th june to 18th June?

    temperature and wind?

    how about in perth?

There are many BnBs in Tasmania. Accomodation shouldnt be a problem. Besides nature, Tasmania also has a lot of historical sites that you can explore like the Penitentiary at Port Arthur and the Richmond Gaol etc. Salamanca Market in Horbart is worth visiting. You may also want to visit places like Strahan, Freycinet, Launceston etc. Winter is harsher than Melbourne and Sydney but it's still bearable.

    Enjoy your trip!

Wind factor is mild... even for Tasmania. Then again, its all relative.
Coastal areas tend to be more windy at times, thus caravans or trailers are not encouraged.

With the shift of temperature trends nowadays (thanks to global warming), it's hard to say what kinda temperatures you'll get during June. I would guess somewhere around 55+ deg F.

Driving is pretty safe, but expect occasional showers (dries off pretty quick).

If you like landscapes, scenary, outdoors, Tasmania is just fantastic, although personally, with only 10days, I'll go for Perth. The thing abt little accommodations outside of Hobart is ridiculous.
You mentioned you "love movement from one town to another town. love the mix of scenary, from beautiful nature landscape to beautiful old towns of its own character". I think both can offer that, just that I felt landscapes wise, Tasmania has more to offer.

You can check out my galleries, though they are taken in spring.
