It will be physically demanding. Oxygen levels at high altitudes will be very low. Not suitable for people with weak hearts or physically weak.

You need to train up for some 2-3 months before going.

Why would it be tougher for a girl than a guy? I don't see why this would make a difference......there are sporty things that girls do that even a guy wouldn't do........:-)

    Info on the instructors:

Shailan Parker, a graphic designer by training has been freelancing as a photographer who does studio and location photography with equally unbridled passion. Shailan has been teaching photography for close to fifteen years as visitiing faculty to various design institutes.

Joginder Singh, an architect by training has been freelancing as a photographer
specialising in photographing architecture. He has been teaching photography and architecture at several design institutes.

    Shailan and Joginder's
love for teaching and the outdoors brings them together to collaborate on conducting photography workshops such as this one.

From personal experience from hikes from 2300 to 3300m above sea level, it will not be easy for both guys and gals if they are physically unfit. I've seen women in their 50s doing such climbs up to 4300m above sea level, so its not limited by gender, but by your preparatory work. Carrying haversack with provisions in thin atmosphere while climbing uphill will be tiring to anybody who is unaccustomed to high altitudes. So it will be better that you condition yourself physically so that you don't your time getting light headed, breathless and coughing (symptoms of altitude sickness) but able to enjoy the scenary, comaraderie and the experience.

    Sounds interesting.
Any website where we can find out more?
Does the price include all the food and camping equipment?

Some additions to the flier from the organisers, as it wasn't clear:

The early birds registrations are already over.

Maximum height travelled will be around 18280 feet. (this is incorrect. the max height travelled will be 14,500 ft average)

and yes, it shall be quite ok for girls. we have three girls already registered for the trek...

what needs to be put across to the possible participants is that this is NOT a MOUNTAINEERING trip...but a TREK which means that you will have enough time to stop, shoot and walk at leisure...

also an important detail that is missing in the mailer is that you don't have to carry your main luggage, like clothes personal stuff etc. that is transported by the trek organizers to the next camp on a pony etc. the tents are also set up for you by the time you reach...a separate kitchen tent is set up and there is staff there to cook the meals for you...so all you have to carry is your camera bags and tripods etc. and that photographers are used to carrying...

the walk is sometimes on gradual slopes and sometimes it gets steep in sections. we have a twelve year old also joining us on the trek and he's done it twice already...

basically, if you have a decent level of fitness which means that if you climb three floors on a staircase and can breathe normally, then you are fit...there is no other preparation required.

i intend to start doing some aerobics two months before the trek and that normally takes care of things...

you definitely should not have vertigo or ashthama - or any kind of breathing trouble. as you go higher, oxygen levels reduce and you start feeling a slight headache...a good way to counter that is to keep sipping small quanities of water. people who are not used to altitude can feel sick too, but that happens for a day and then you get acclimatized to the height. it is purely for this reason that we stay for a day at solang, from where the trek begins.

    Hongsien,
Thanks for sharing. Would've loved to do this one but cant get leave around that time.

    All,
The bus drive from Delhi to Manali itself will be quite demanding. Its almost a 16 hr bus ride. The drivers are veterans and they take the corners high up in the mountains, at break neck speed. If you are not strong enough to withstand the journey, you will be puking all the way.

Having said that, the upper reaches of the Himalayas are extremely spectacular. Whoever has signed up for the trip, I am sure you are gonna love every moment.

Good luck and do share some of your photos when you get back.

    Cheers.

You mean after reading about the bus trip, it all became attractive isn't it? he he he

As far as I understand, the bus trip is by hired bus, not with those hell drivers.....:-)

There are still some slots available.........not confirmed yet, but about 3-4 slots available this evening (Tuesday 10 April).

NOTE: Flight from SIN to DEL (Singapore to Delhi) must arrange yourself, costs by Indian Airlines around SGD 490 ex. tax per person (through www.zuji.com.sg), with all taxes about SGD 650
