I realise my 30D is producing slightly soft pictures even use with 70-200 mm f4 IS lens. I tried other lens as well, all turn out slightly softer. Issit the camera sensor problem? can it be service?

Just send your camera and all your Canon lenses to the service center for calibration. You should get everything back within a week.

my guess is that the lens needs calibration...
usually its not the body but the lens... back focus or front focus or the element misaligned.. funny things can happen when lens/bodies grows with age. ![]() my 2cnts. |

he is using the 70-200F4L IS, so can't be due to an old lens. What is the sharpness setting on the 30D/ picture style you are using? Try bumping up the sharpness parameter?

The camera is just 2 months old. I tried it with another tamron 28-70 at the sharpest aperture too. It still feels soft. or rather softer den the 70-200. My ultra wide also feels softer den usual. Prob the camera rite?

It could be you. Not saying that it is, but just could.
(as for my case, I think I found out that the problem was with me - infected with other peoples super super sharp camera/lenses, that I became dissatisfied with mine!) Any pics? Last edited by adamadam; 7th April 2007 at 07:27 AM. |

Must realise that the sharpness parameter is considered in-camera post-processing, after the photo is shot. If it's not sharp by nature, sharpening will not be able to make it any sharper.
I suspect backfocus on one or more of your lenses. Either that, or there is the small possibility of hand-shake. Best would be peektures so we can see how soft the results are. |

Shoot in RAW, use DPP, and adjust Sharpness level accordingly. Default is at sharpness is 3 i believe.
Then use a focus test chart to check your focusing. If it is spot on with no front or back focus, the cam and lens is OK. Else send to CSC for adjustments. So, all you have to do is to adjust the Sharpness level in DPP to your taste. That should be it. |

nevertheless, i would never recommend the use of 3rd party lenses. Not because they arent good. but the problem of QC. or maybe handshake ? 70-200 f4 IS ? put on tripod and test ?? thats the best way to eliminate the handshakes.. (for now.) ![]() |

Too kei sim to think about it, send both camera and lens to canon service center and let the professional technician to sort things out. BTW my 70 - 200 f4L softer at 70mm sharper at 200mm end (but not as sharpas my 28 - 135 IS). Thinking of sending in for the professional to sort it out as well. I was disappointed howcome both of my L Lens loss to a 28 - 135 IS. Hope I can take back a super copy!

i think posting some pics will be good.. at least it will do some justice to the lens and camera, especially so if the 'softness' is not from faulty equipment.

I kinda tested it today again on a tripod and i realise that the is isnt automatically turned off when it was on it. It suppose to have tripod detection. But after i turn the is off. I shot and i found that the sharpness is much more than without IS. Maybe the IS is faulty
