Love my 28-200 XR for travel and portability when I want to travel around and only print 4R.

Me too. I got my 28-300 cos of the price, range and portability. It had a pretty good review from Petersen's Photographic but everyone talks only about Sigma in terms of 3rd party lenses. Is it really that bad?

There are some who use 1000mm at f/22.

    sigma 50-500 4/6.3

6.3 is ~2.5 stops away from 2.8. Just use higher ISO. Not everyone can afford those 2.8 or IS lenses.

Hey, that's why this is in Newbies! Just wanted to get something in this range and cheap to try out. Yep, not easy to use at 300mm with no IS unless on a tripod.

Anyway, how much does this lens cost?

    $410 for 28-200, $600+ for 28-300. From Cathay.

forgot to mention that even for the 28-200 XR, it is really for outdoor usage.

    It has more limitations indoors.

I own the Tamron 28-200mm XR.
Using it as a backup & all-rounder lens.
Think its not as bad as wat reviews state. Onli thing is its not as bright as my Sigma EX 28-70mm F2.8

I did some comparison shots. Details & brightness is the onli difference in my opinion.
The Tamron is a veri versatile lens 4 travelling if u want to travel light with relatively acceptable shots.
Its light & does not extend too far when zoomed at max.

In fact to a layman, most cannot tell the diff with pictures taken by the Sigma & Tamron. Pictures developed at 4R dun really show I think.

The Tokina may be a better choice though. Hehehe....

Yep, same with the 28-300XR. Quite slow to focus in low light and sometimes can't at all! Also probably due to Canon's notoriety for poor low light performance.

currently am using the tamron 28-200mm Super XR zoom macro

IMHO, its a good lens for its range and versatility

yes..under low light takes a blardy long time to hunt :S

but well, think for me being a newbie...still got lotsa to learn..

anywayz its THE ONLY lens so far that i'm having...

so am goign to fully exploit its capabilities and use it esp for travel

    cheers

get the 28-200 XR from Alan Photo at $380.
They will of course try to cut u saying that price doesn't include 4% GST. Good luck trying to circumvent that.

I would love to know too.

Just ask about the performance of this Tokina in a new thread, but no replies yet
