Default 430EX question

Hi all,
I have just bought a new 430EX but wondering that why the zoom focal length doesn't automatically be display on the flash LCD when press the shutter button halfway to focus the object. Is there any way to turn it on? I'm using 400D with 24-105L IS.

Thanks,

Perhaps because your flash head zoom is accidentaly set to manual zoom.
Switch to auto and it should be fine.

Thanks, but I'm sure that it wasn't set to manual zoom as no "M" icon displayed on LCD.

Did you mount the flash tightly? I had issues when it was loose before. Does the fresnel lens inside move or is it totaly unchanging?

Correct. If it is in any other orientation other than straight ahead, the zoom info will not be displayed unless you override with manual zoom.

E-TTL II is not equal to zooming... Here's the EOS Flash Bible to tell you more...

basically what E-TTL II does is to fire a pre-flash when you press the shutter button, calculate the appropriate exposure and fire the actual flash after.. Usually you won't notice it unless u are using 2nd curtain sync, coz the pre-flash is fired at the split second before the shutter opens...

zooming is just used to save power.. The longer the focal length, the narrower the angle of view.. Therefore there is no need to cover the angle of view of a 24mm lens, when maybe u're using a 80mm focal length.. zooming allows more light to be focused forward, providing more power ==> higher efficiency, save battery..

The reason y zooming isn't switched on when bouncing is because the angle/height of bounce affects the area that will be lit up.. the angle of spread of the flash will no longer be the same as what would be used normally. So to play safe, the flash will select the widest setting, unless u choose to select urself manually..
