I own a F31fd for about 3 months now and love to take photos with it. Went on a trip recently and took about 250 photos and shortlisted about 75 photos to print. Spent a good few hours to crop all the 75 photos to 4R with minor pp for a few photos. Went into one shop yesterday and was told that the top part of the 4R sized photo in landscape would be cut off slightly even when I have cropped the photos to be printed in 4R, hence I went back to recrop the photos again. Went into another shop today and they told me that the photos would come out as I have cropped and I told them not to do any corrections on the photos as I am happy with the image quality without any pp except for the crop. The photos printed eventually turned out quite dark as compared to being viewed on the pc and there was some cutting off at the bottom (in landscape). Photos taken at midday would look like they were taken in the evening. I was not pleased at all and asked them to reprint with corrections to improve the quality of the print. I have already paid full price for the first set and agreed to pay 1/2 price for the second. After about an hour I went back and the quality was much better but the size was not - they couldn't get the proper 4R size cut out properly and ended up shorter on all sides. Told them to check again and reprint if necessary. Came back 1/2 hour later and they told me that they couldn't get the photos to print in full 4R size! I was not pleased at all and they agreed to refund me.
1. The quality of the final products - the printed photos - rests on the person who prints them. They would view the photos in their pc and make some adjustments to their liking which may not necessarily be the same as yours. I like the image quality of the F31fd but I feel that the shops may not do justice to the quality even if the photos were taken by better cameras. What you see on your pc may not turn out to be so in print. 2. I would have thought that once you have cropped the photos to 4R to print also in 4R, the prints would be exactly as what you have cropped them to be but this was not so. Have any of you experienced these issues? If so, what can be done about them? Last edited by damkuff; 31st March 2007 at 05:50 PM. |

I cropped them to 4R (6 X 4) to be printed in 4R size. Perhaps its the machine the shop is using or that the shop attendants were not knowledgeable.
It was not from the LCD that I viewed the photos but from the PC. Generally I find that images taken with average metering were a tad darker than those with multi metering. Besides using the Beach preset option (which keeps the ISO at 200 max) with face detection, I generally shoot in M mode and my settings are: 1. LCD brightness: -2 2. Exposure compensation: 0 3. Auto white balance 4. Auto Focus: Centre 5. Multi metering Last edited by damkuff; 1st April 2007 at 12:00 AM. |

For my F31, I only set my camera AR/Quality to 3:2, image size: 3024 x 2016.
So when I send for printing don't need to do any crop, and fit exactly 4R size. Personally I prefer 4R size |

Thanks for the info. I do not know what mine is set to as I do not have it with me now. My images are 2048 x 1536 which do not fit into a 4R format without cropping. Thanks again for the tip, appreciate it a lot!!!

Ok, the quality is 3MP, AR 4:3.
If u set to AR 3:2 for F31 only allow 1 quality which is 6MP. I think I know Panasonic you can set to AR 3:2 with few image quality. |
