To shoot far subject means tele photo. To shoot far subject, you can get 40-150mm F3.5-F4.5(Dual kit lens contains this lens) or go for a 50-200mm F2.8-F3.5(S$ 1700 or so).If you want to shoot really far subject, get a Sigma 135-400mm F4.5-F5.6 or a Sigma 50-500mm F4-F6.3 aka Bigma.

Olympus DSLRs have a crop factor of 2. So calculate accordingly. Using the rough guide in one way or another will get the approximate focal length you need to get in order to get a certain subject size in your frame from a certain shooting distance. With focal length and subject size, you can calculate the shooting distance you need. With subject size and shooting distance, you can calculate the focal length you need. With focal length and shooting distance, you can calculate the subject size in your frame. Last edited by Clockunder; 31st March 2007 at 12:59 PM. |

e500 has 4/3's mount. You can only mount 4/3 lenses on top of it directly. Alternatively, you can get the OM adapter and use Olympus OM lenses. For 4/3 lenses : Olympus 50-200mm for telephoto Olympus 11-22 for wide angle |

As long as the brand produces lenses or versions of lenses in Four-Thirds mount (like Sigma which produces versions of their lenses for Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus mounts), those lenses could be used on Olympus DSLRs like the E-500 or other brands of DSLRs using the Four-Thirds system eg. Panasonic L1 and Leica Digilux 3.
Here is a list of all the lenses that are currently available for the Four-Thirds system DSLRs: http://www.four-thirds.org/en/products/lense.html

Well, to begin with I don't think there are that many Oly users using Sigma lenses.

Just wonder, why don't you visit a camera shop or read the E-500 manual or visit any Olympus site? I feel your questions to be too basic to come from one who says he/she is interested in a dSLR camera. Maybe reading a book or a magazine should be a better start than getting an E-500. Anyway, if you get the camera you will get a lens with it and a whole lot of quaestions will be answered. The E-500 is just too advanced unless you'll use it as any P&S camera and in that case there is no advantage in it, just a lot of trouble.

Get the E-500 twin lens kit. 14-45 and the 40-150. After that, sign up for a basic course in Digital Photography. Olympus offers that at a very low price. Most of your basic questions will be answered there.
Check this out. free course by fellow member of CS. http://forums.clubsnap.com/showthread.php?t=272106

If I'd print all the free information that is available on the Internet I'd need tons of paper.
I think to start with a twin lens kit is too expensive. Best is to start reading. Once the basics are understood it is better to get an advanced P&S or compact to get some practice. There is money to save if TS realizes it is not his/her cup of tea. If on the other hand TS wants to carry on, it is always a good idea to have a small camera as a spare, one can always find some use of it. Even if it is sold, the loss would be less than if a dSLR is sold. Even if TS has unlimited resources it is better to get a simpler camera to start with and grow with the camera. In the meantine he/she waits for the E-510. If the interest is still hot in July, get an E-510 dual lens kit. As the old saying goes, it is not the camera but the eyes that look through the viewfinder that creates images. |

Sometimes it's also friends helping each other. Not necessary attending a class. An informal get together by some forumers is also a good place to learn more of the camera.
