Nikkor 50mm f1.8 - hands down. May not be the very best lens around in terms of optics, but nothing can beat it when it comes to value - only $160 or so, but is super fats, delivers razor sharp pictures and has little distortion. I love this lens!

Try Zeiss Softar II filter w/ any portrait-length lens. The diffusion is nice for softening ladies without getting fuzzy. The highlights in hair and eyes seem to shimmer, an effect unique to the Softar. Expensive but delivers a special quality that no other filter can. Softar became famous as Hasselblad filter, but it is also available from other filter manufacturers in 58mm thread for the DSC F-717. Again, the price is a shocker. BUT if you specialize in portraits, your clients will love your work.

Or just get the Minolta soft focus lens.

Agree... Minolta 100 Soft Focus is very nice..
to me, the soft effect of Min 100SF is better than zeiss softar.
I have the zeiss softar now and had the Min 100 SF before.

Minolta MC 58/1.2:

Of course 85/1.4 is one of the best... but sold it away already..
