This guy was proudly showing off the garoupa he caught in his fish trap, underneath the Sheare's Bridge. They're called Boo-Boo's, and are flask-shaped traps made of wire mesh. They're left in the water, and fish swim in and remain trapped inside. The traps are checked occasionally, and any fish inside is harvested.

You've got an excellent photo here. I think you captured the fisherman's pride and joy, and I like that his body is slightly turned, instead of full frontal. I've just taken a second look and noted what others may consider distractions: plastic bag, towel, bike basket, and still think it's a great picture. If you had taken the trouble to tidy up the area and pose the uncle, he may not be smiling as sweetly and naturally as he is now!
This is one environmental portrait that I'll be happy to enlarge and frame up. |

Streetshooter,
It is bubu, it a traditional malay fish trap. Orignially it made of bamboo. No wonder his proud. Such a big fish he caught there. Did you see how he placed and retrieved his bubu? -FND-> |

Oops, what a boo-boo. Bubu, eh?
He swims out to the centre pillars which support Sheares' Bridge, and launches and retrieves his bubu's from there. |
