Discussion of South East Asia cinema..

Hi guys, i just want to start this thread for some discussion =)

It seems there are some not so bad movie by South East Asia.. but usually out of spotlight =)

Malaysia
i have actually watched lots from malaysia cable tv channel 'kirana', it surprises me that there are 'not too bad' films by malaysia..but those films are not really that in spotlight.. any guys who can recommend some good malaysia film? i have watched a bit like 'melari ke langit','gangster'..but really need more understanding in malaysia film..

Sepet-this one is actually quite popular that some guys should have seen it.

Most impressions are Jack Neo's.. i havent really finished watching any of his films..somehow feel like not my cup of tea.

Kailangan Kita - culinary theme love story.. quite nice.

Minsan, Minahal Kita - love story with middle-aged

Tears of black tiger - quite like it
Few thais horrors film..quite okay.

Vietnam
The scent of green papaya
The cyclo
The vertical Ray of Sunshine


Good or bad, i think what had interested me is the culture roots in this films, it is just different from hollywood or europe film.

Any good website have a good overview of all these countries' film?
I am interested to watch some older films too, like lino brocka's the jaws of neonlight..

any film fans there?

i think there are more than one filmaker in Singapore. I'm not really into films, but people like Royston Tan, Eric Khoo are pretty good ones too. I like their productions more than Jack Neo's series.

Whenever i watch Jack Neo's films in the cinema, i feel so stupid. It just feels like watching Mediacorp TV serials kind of production.

I can recommend a great book written by Raphael Millet, who used to reside in Singapore till recently. The book covers a history of Singapore films and gives an interesting perspective of older and more recent works. A great read, imo.

this book, singaporean cinema is solid.

anyone who's interested in the making of Saint Jack should pick up Ben Slater's "Kinda Hot : The Making of Saint Jack in Singapore".

For those who are unaware, Saint Jack was based on a novel written by the famous Paul Theroux, who was a lecturer at the Department of English Language and Literature in the University of Singapore before he became a novelist after being fired for holding certain opinions contrary to the climate then.

i agree totally.. a solid bk ..very well done ..

btw ... is this discussion limited only to discussion of the commerical cinema of SEA or the whole cinematic community .. both arthse, commerical, underground or otherwise..

i duno bout the rest..

but u( hi there, trend starter) seemed to be referring to singapore's commerical cinema JACKNEOism era.. well... tats gona start another debate on why is he so successful.. commerically.. but artistically.. he can do alot beta
