    If it's the former, then go with a D70s, D50 or D80...

If you're looking for a small fun and light camera, then get the D40X. The differences are all in the user interface. If you can't get at them easily, chances are, you won't bother with them when you have the camera.

You need to play around with the Aperture, Shutter speed and ISO to have a better idea on how they correlate to help you get the desired picture. Else you may just end up with the Green button mode most of the time and frankly, it's gonna be a larger sized PnS....
actually come to think of it, I think even d50 doesn't really offer any function more than the d40...

    Hi
I too am a newcomer to Photography. and i put on this forum that i was going to buy a Canon 450D. I ordered it but the shop told me it got lost in transit and could not be found Then the shop said another one would not be available until sometime March. Then on going to the shop to collect it they then told me it would be sometime in April until the camera came in as i wanted a better quality lens than the basic one
, Now i am a patient fellow but i was not going to wait that long on the whim of the distributer, so i told them to forget the camera and i would get another make
I then handled the NIkon D 80. and the Nikon D40.
My problem is this. I have very small hands and the Nikon D80 felt big and heavy for comfort
When i picked up the Nikon D40 it felt just right in my hands, Comortable and pleasant to hold.
So, I thought i would go one better and get a Nikon D40X. I have not ordered it yet, but was going to next week when the camera came into the shop.
I like 'Lumpyme' am in a bit of a muddle as to know what to get. I chose the Canon solely because it was lighter in weight than the Nikon D80 but i too am unsure as to buy the Nikon D40X or the NikonD80 i may get used to the size and Weight, on the other hand i may not.
How much difference is there in the two Cameras regards quality and performance.
To start with until i learn about the camera i buy i will use Autofocus more then as i learn use more of the controls. But once i buy the camera i cannot afford to change it for another
Sorry its a long post but like Lumpme i too do not know which to buy
    Thanks

get the D40X.....u won't know the diff if u dun intend to go far....
if yes...jump direct to D3XH (whatever future model they came out with)by that time even the D80 and D200 won't be able to satisfy yr need

It's not easy with pets.. Esp. active ones. Get one with good AF function and ability to snap good contrasty pics. The controls should also be at your fingertips and you should be able to work them to your choice when needed...

i'm a canon user here... but i'd say go for the d70s.. MP count will not amount to anything... and the features of the d70s make it a better camera for one to learn about all the functions nikon camera provides and how to use them.. these extras can may or may not help u to get better pictures... and, u'll have less difficulty learning to use any future nikons that u may upgrade to, coz the features will be more similar...

now this sort of post confuses the heck out of me.
wouldn't getting familiar with the newer d40x be better since it is a newer camera design, and makes you more familiar with future nikon models?

Well, for one. The controls on the D40 is minimalistic... as such, it's more of a improvement/progression path from the PnS side... D70 while old model, is more of a standard in terms of user functions and modes avail.

Not lecture la I understand where you're coming from. I was confused just like you when i first started out but soon didn't care as much abt equipment than making sure I get the picture.

Ok in all fairness not everyone in this forum thinks alike but since you asked I'm giving my honest-to-goodness feedback. If I were you, start with a camera that fits your current budget and current skill level. As you're just starting out, frankly there's no point spending top dollar on a camera that has more gadgets than James Bond and find yourself spending more time on what this function does than taking pics! Agree?

Whether you pick the D70s or D40x, either cam will serve you fine. Next time when yr skills improve and you insist on a bigger and badder camera then go for it. Basics first! Enjoy.

    Er...what is a D40x?

Maybe you can be more specific, as to which control feature that is lacking on the D40x, which the D70 has? I couldn't find anything between these two besides the internal AF motor. Thanks.
