If money is not an issue here, definitely the D80.

Streetshooter? Taking the cam with you everyday, even at work, for any photo op that may pop up? ( I do both, btw) Even with money no object, I still would take D40/x portability anytime. Pair with the 10-20 sig, cracking!
For everything else... |

You will not be able to use any kind of lens with the D40. Got too many limitations.
If you get a bit more serious into photography, you will want extra featurres that the D40 does not have. You will have to sell it ang get a cam with more specs. You will therefore end up spending twice. Get the D80. It will have everything you need. |

Nikon's idea of a D40/D40x is very smart.
The lower body price seems attractive for newbies who are starting off, so they snap it up, only to find that they can't use ANY Nikon AF lenses EXCEPT AF-S lenses. Even so, there may be cheap AF-S lenses, but the range is limited, and if you have any old AF-D/AF-G Nikkors, you can't use them with AF on the D40. You don't get AF on most of the primes, especially the cheap/good 50mm/1.8. So eventually, you end up spending more on your lenses in the end. |

IMO, both cameras are targeted at at distinct groups of users.
D40(x) is for people who recognize the limitations of a pns and want something that's more flexible but not too complicated. D80 is for the serious hobbyist who is already familiar with dslrs or wants to go in depth into photography. For the pros, they are likely to be D2x / D200 users. Of course, your budget is a impt consideration too. Best is to try out the cameras that you are considering yourself, and decide which one suits you. You can go and see if there's any available for rent. |

Forget the D40, you'll hate yourself for buying it, the D40 is only good as a backup cam.

For a long term investment, I would buy the D80.......the extra features would last me longer b4 i think about an upgrade.....
![]() Since I own the D50, buying the D40x would not be such a huge upgrade for me.....so no point i think..... ![]() Last edited by Stanly; 14th March 2007 at 04:26 PM. |

This kind'o question is quite hard to answer... It's like comparing a toyota to a mercedes. Of course, both of them are of good quality, but due to money constraints, you have to settle with the former. If money is not an issue, i would get the Mercedes anytime. So in this case, if money isn't a matter, i would get the D80. The D40x is just a D40 with faster frame rate and high MP. And of course, if money isn't the matter, i would probably have gotten a D2Xs!

Bro,
Since you have looked at what you need, next look at supportability of lenses. Like some of them mentioned - consider the range of lenses. Ultimately, you can fold your long pants anytime to become a bermuda. You cannot lengthen your bermuda unless you send them to the tailor... ![]()

Very nice to bring as travel cam. Light, small and less loss if stolen during overseas travel.
